VA Tech WABAG Wins Rs 700 Crore Order for Wastewater Treatment Plants in Zambia

VA Tech WABAG, a prominent player in water treatment technology, has secured a significant order worth Rs 700 crore (Euro 78 million) to design, build, and operate two advanced wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Zambia. This order, funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Germany-based Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), marks a major milestone for WABAG, not only in terms of financial value but also in its expansion into the African market.

The contract was awarded by the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) and involves the construction of two key wastewater treatment plants—one with a capacity of 54 million litres per day (MLD) in Ngwerere and another with a 19 MLD capacity in Chunga. This project is set to play a vital role in improving Zambia’s water and sanitation infrastructure, addressing the increasing demand for clean water and effective wastewater treatment in the country. The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) phase of the project will take 36 months, followed by 24 months of operation and maintenance (O&M) to ensure the plants function sustainably and efficiently. The most notable aspect of the plants is their commitment to green energy solutions. The majority of the energy needs of these facilities will be met through biogas and solar power, in line with WABAG’s dedication to sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of water treatment processes.

Guhan Kandasamy, Head of Sales and Marketing for Africa at WABAG, expressed the company’s pride in securing such a prestigious order, stating, “Through this project, WABAG is proud to contribute significantly to the Zambian government’s mission to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure, positively impacting countless lives.”

The Zambian government has long recognised the need for sustainable and modern sanitation solutions. Officials have voiced their support for the project, emphasising its importance for public health and the environment. They believe that improving wastewater treatment facilities will not only safeguard water quality but also create a lasting impact on the local communities, providing cleaner water and reducing the risks associated with waterborne diseases. The completion of these advanced WWTPs is part of Zambia’s broader efforts to enhance its water and sanitation infrastructure. The project aligns with the country’s national development goals, which include improving access to clean water and expanding sanitation services to underserved areas. Government officials are confident that this project will serve as a model for future sanitation initiatives, with WABAG’s expertise setting a high standard for similar projects across the region.

WABAG’s expansion into Africa with this contract also reinforces its position as a global leader in water technology. The company has already designed and built over 1,500 water and wastewater treatment plants worldwide, solidifying its reputation for delivering reliable and sustainable water solutions. By continuing to partner with international financial institutions like the EIB and KfW, WABAG is well-positioned to lead the charge in meeting the rising demand for water infrastructure across emerging markets. With its strong track record and commitment to green energy solutions, WABAG is helping shape the future of water treatment, not just in Zambia but across the African continent. This project is a significant step towards improving sanitation, enhancing public health, and creating a more sustainable future for the region.
