Uttarakhand Sees Major Rail Boost with Deoband-Roorkee Line, Himalayan Tunnels Progress

Dehradun, the gateway to Uttarakhand, is poised for a significant transformation with the sanctioning of three new railway lines valued at over ₹40,384 crore. These projects represent a monumental leap forward in connecting the state’s challenging terrain, promising to enhance mobility and foster sustainable economic development. The ambitious plan is set to improve connectivity to key religious and tourist destinations, ensuring that the state’s natural and cultural heritage becomes more accessible to a wider populace. With a substantial increase in budgetary allocation, the focus is squarely on creating a robust, efficient, and environmentally conscious rail network that will serve as the backbone for the region’s future growth.

A cornerstone of this infrastructural push is the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag new rail line, a project entirely within Uttarakhand’s boundaries. This prestigious undertaking is a testament to engineering prowess, navigating the formidable Himalayan geology to link Rishikesh with Devprayag and Karnaprayag. The project’s design meticulously addresses the delicate ecology of the region, with a significant portion of the line, predominantly tunnels, built to minimise environmental disturbance. The use of advanced technologies, including a Tunnel Boring Machine for the longest tunnel, underscores a commitment to both efficiency and ecological preservation. This line is expected to revolutionise travel, making spiritual and adventure tourism more accessible while adhering to the principles of sustainable development.

In addition to the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line, the completed Deoband-Roorkee new line project is already yielding benefits. This 27 km stretch has reduced the travel distance between Delhi and Dehradun by approximately 40 km, a tangible gain for commuters seeking faster, more efficient travel. Such projects are instrumental in creating gender-neutral and equitable cities by providing reliable public transport options that are accessible to all segments of society, regardless of their background. The railway’s expansion not only cuts down travel time and costs but also reduces the dependency on private vehicles, thereby contributing to the broader goal of achieving zero-net-carbon emissions.

The increased budget for infrastructure and safety works in Uttarakhand is a clear indicator of the government’s unwavering commitment to the region. The annual outlay has surged to ₹4,641 crore, a nearly 25-fold increase over previous years. This substantial investment is funding not only the new lines but also crucial surveys for future projects, ensuring a pipeline of sustainable growth. The emphasis on rail infrastructure is a strategic move to unlock the economic potential of the state while protecting its pristine natural environment. By prioritising projects that are both economically viable and environmentally sound, the railway is paving the way for a more prosperous, connected, and sustainable Uttarakhand.
