Uttarakhand is advancing its four-lane road project at Banbasa, a critical point connecting the two countries.
The project, which is being undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is aimed at bolstering cross-border trade and improving connectivity for both nations.The 3.06 km long road will play a pivotal role in strengthening the border area’s strategic, economic, and social significance. During a site inspection, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami took stock of the project’s progress, emphasising the importance of timely completion while ensuring high construction standards. “This road will not only fortify international trade but will also enhance the movement of goods and people between India and Nepal,” he said.
Initially approved with a budget of Rs 177 crore, the project’s cost has since been revised due to the challenging geographical and technical conditions. With the addition of vital infrastructure, including a flyover and several bridges, the revised estimate has climbed to Rs 250 crore. Construction work, which began in March 2023, was originally scheduled for completion by 2024. However, unforeseen natural disasters, including floods, have delayed progress, and the project is now expected to be completed by 2027.The project holds substantial promise in terms of economic development. As a key link to Nepal’s dry port, the road will provide a vital trade corridor, enhancing the movement of goods not just across the border but throughout the region.
The infrastructure upgrade is poised to contribute to the economic growth of both Uttarakhand and Nepal, fostering greater cooperation in industries ranging from agriculture to manufacturing.With an emphasis on sustainability, the project’s execution will align with environmentally-conscious development practices, including the preservation of local ecosystems and the reduction of carbon emissions from construction activities. Moreover, the creation of green spaces along the road and efficient drainage systems are part of efforts to ensure that the infrastructure benefits the local population without compromising environmental integrity.This initiative is also seen as a crucial step towards enhancing the region’s security infrastructure.
By improving road connectivity, it ensures quicker deployment of resources in case of emergencies and strengthens the overall border control mechanisms.
Officials overseeing the project have been instructed to ensure that construction adheres to strict timelines and quality standards. “This project will serve as a symbol of our commitment to enhancing India-Nepal relations while fostering regional development,” added the Chief Minister.The completion of this road will significantly alter the landscape of cross-border infrastructure in India, transforming not just the region’s trade dynamics but also its connectivity, economic resilience, and potential for future growth.
