UPI Boosts Ease in ST Bus Payments

In a strategic move to modernise Maharashtra’s public transport system and minimise passenger-conductor disputes over small change, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has advocated for the widespread adoption of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for State Transport (ST) bus ticket payments. The initiative aims to streamline transactions, enhance commuter convenience, and foster a cashless ecosystem within the public transport sector.

Frequent disagreements regarding the return of loose change have been a persistent issue across ST buses. Recognising this challenge, Minister Sarnaik emphasised the efficiency of digital transactions, noting that UPI payments can effectively eliminate such conflicts. The initiative has already shown promising results, with UPI transactions reportedly doubling in recent days, reflecting growing passenger acceptance. To facilitate this digital shift, all ST buses are now equipped with Android Electronic Ticket Issuing Machines (ATIMs), enabling seamless UPI-based payments. These machines support quick scanning and instant processing, ensuring a hassle-free ticketing experience for both passengers and conductors.

Further strengthening this initiative, the ST Corporation has issued a directive mandating that conductors receive an advance allowance before commencing their duties. This measure aims to reduce dependence on small cash transactions, further mitigating the risk of disputes. Minister Sarnaik has also instructed the corporation to adopt proactive measures to prevent similar issues in the future, underlining the government’s commitment to improving passenger experiences. The push towards digital payments aligns with broader national efforts to promote a cashless economy, especially within public services. By reducing cash handling, the move not only enhances operational efficiency but also supports financial transparency within the ST Corporation. As Maharashtra continues to embrace digital innovations in public transport, the adoption of UPI for ST bus fares marks a significant step towards a more efficient, commuter-friendly system.
