The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to build electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on a large scale, with the aim of making the state a leader in the field of EVs in the country. The government is working in coordination with NITI Aayog and the Asian Development Bank to prepare the Comprehensive Electric Mobility Plan (Cemp) for Lucknow. The scheme will be launched in all 17 municipal corporations selected under the Smart City Mission and extended to other cities in future. The government has entrusted the Urban Development Department (UDD) with the responsibility of setting up EV charging stations as per provisions of the policy.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, UDD has started the process of extending Cemp to 17 cities with municipal corporations as soon as possible under the Smart City Mission, along with meeting land requirements of service providers for charging facilities in the state. A working group has also been formed under the leadership of UDD to fast-track the development of charging infrastructure.
As per the EV policy, land will be made available on lease for a period of 10 years to government entities for setting up charging stations. A nodal institution, Invest UP, has been approved under the policy, and charging stations will be set up as per its rules.
The state government is not just focusing on encouraging the manufacturing of EVs but also making serious efforts to provide proper charging facilities to citizens. Strategic routes will be identified for the development of charging facilities while changing the transport system. The government’s commitment to building an EV-enabling infrastructure is in line with the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (Nemmp) which aims to develop electric vehicle charging infrastructure using the latest technological platforms, along with easy access to charging points.
