The Uttar Pradesh government has given its crucial approval for a new six-lane, access-controlled expressway, a transformative ₹4,775.84 crore project set to redefine inter-city travel across central and eastern Uttar Pradesh. This nearly 50-kilometre greenfield corridor will seamlessly connect the existing Agra-Lucknow Expressway to the Purvanchal Expressway, significantly decongesting Lucknow city and enhancing the state’s comprehensive expressway grid. This strategic infrastructure development underscores a commitment to fostering efficient, sustainable, and equitable urban growth across the region.
Executed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), this vital link will commence near Mohan Road on the Agra-Lucknow corridor and terminate near Gosainganj on the Purvanchal Expressway. Designed with foresight, the route allows for future expansion to eight lanes, demonstrating a long-term vision for robust infrastructure that can accommodate increasing traffic demands. This forward-thinking approach is essential for building resilient and sustainable cities capable of supporting future population and economic growth without compromising environmental integrity.
A key benefit of this new corridor is its ability to bypass Lucknow’s bustling urban areas, offering direct connectivity for vehicles travelling from Agra and Delhi towards eastern Uttar Pradesh. This strategic bypass will alleviate significant bottlenecks at traffic-heavy points such as Singarnagar, Krishnanagar, Barabirwa, and Avadh Hospital Chauraha, which currently burden daily commuters. By diverting through-traffic away from city roads, the new expressway will contribute substantially to reducing urban congestion, vehicular emissions, and noise pollution, aligning perfectly with the agenda for zero net carbon and eco-friendly cities.
Moreover, the expressway will integrate major highways leading to Prayagraj, Rae Bareli, Kanpur, Amethi, Sultanpur, and Unnao, further enhancing regional accessibility. Dedicated entry and exit ramps towards Kanpur and Rae Bareli roads are planned to streamline traffic flow, ensuring that the benefits of reduced travel time and improved connectivity extend to a wider geographical area. This improved mobility is crucial for local economies, facilitating smoother movement of goods and people, thereby boosting trade and fostering balanced development across Uttar Pradesh’s varied regions.
This upcoming corridor is an integral component of a larger, ambitious plan to establish a seamless expressway grid across Uttar Pradesh. It will interlink existing and under-construction routes, including the Ganga Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and Gorakhpur Link Expressway. Such an interconnected network is pivotal for fostering balanced regional development, enabling faster and more efficient movement across key economic centres like Agra, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Ghazipur, and Varanasi. This extensive grid is designed to not only serve economic objectives but also to enhance the quality of life for citizens by reducing commute times and improving access to essential services.
Complementing this infrastructure push, the state cabinet has concurrently approved substantial investment proposals totalling ₹21,481.77 crore. These include significant clearances for an ₹11,399 crore solar manufacturing unit in Greater Noida, a clear nod towards sustainable industrial development and renewable energy adoption, alongside projects in Unnao, Shahjahanpur, Farrukhabad, and the YEIDA region. Furthermore, draft regulations for the Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority Area have been approved, stipulating guidelines for construction rules, road widths, and vital environmental safeguards. This holistic approach to development, encompassing both physical infrastructure and strategic industrial investments, aims to foster equitable growth and bolster the state’s economic resilience. The appointment of C-DAC to upgrade the state’s Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS) with real-time dashboards further signals a commitment to transparent and efficient governance, crucial for the long-term sustainability of these large-scale public investments.
