Una Infrastructure Push Targets Water Health Access

A series of new public infrastructure projects announced in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district is expected to strengthen basic services ranging from drinking water supply to healthcare and local governance facilities, signalling the state government’s push to expand rural service infrastructure in smaller urban and semi-urban centres.

The initiatives form part of a broader Una infrastructure development push aimed at improving access to essential services in the region. Officials confirmed that investments in modern drinking water purification technologies alone are expected to reach nearly ₹2,000 crore in the coming financial year, with the goal of reducing waterborne illnesses and improving public health outcomes across the state. During a public programme in the district, authorities also initiated work on a new drinking water project designed to supply clean water to several gram panchayats in the Kutlehar region. The scheme, estimated to cost around ₹14.9 crore, is expected to provide improved water access to more than 10,000 residents in surrounding villages once completed.

Beyond water infrastructure, the Una infrastructure development plan includes a range of civic and institutional projects aimed at strengthening local service networks. Plans were announced for a new police office and a subordinate court facility in the Bangana area, along with primary healthcare centres in nearby settlements. These facilities are expected to expand administrative reach and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for basic government or legal services. Urban development analysts note that investments in district-level infrastructure often play a critical role in balancing regional growth. Smaller towns and rural districts across northern India frequently face service gaps in drinking water, healthcare and public administration. Addressing these deficits can improve public health outcomes while supporting more balanced economic activity across regions.

Water infrastructure remains a particularly pressing issue in hill states where dispersed settlements and varied terrain complicate supply networks. Experts say large-scale investments in purification and distribution systems can help ensure safer drinking water while supporting national programmes such as the central government’s effort to expand household tap water access under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The district has already witnessed multiple investments in irrigation, water supply and river management in recent years, reflecting a broader focus on improving basic infrastructure across the region’s towns and villages. For regional planners, the significance of the new initiatives lies not only in individual projects but in their cumulative impact.

Expanding water supply networks, strengthening healthcare access and improving administrative infrastructure can collectively enhance quality of life while supporting more resilient local economies. If implemented effectively, the Una infrastructure development programme could serve as a model for similar districts seeking to upgrade essential services without relying solely on large metropolitan investments.
