Ulwe Coastal Road Nears Completion Strengthening Connectivity To Atal Setu And NMIA

The Ulwe Coastal Road project in Navi Mumbai has achieved nearly 60 per cent completion, marking a significant step in the city’s effort to improve mobility and integrate key economic zones with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the six-lane, seven-kilometre corridor aims to link the Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) directly with the airport, creating a seamless travel experience for commuters and logistics operators.

Spanning a 5.8-kilometre coastal stretch and a 0.9-kilometre airport connector, the project has been designed to relieve congestion on Palm Beach Road, Amra Marg, and National Highway 348. According to CIDCO officials, the new link will reduce travel time between South Mumbai and the NMIA zone, while providing faster access to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the Navi Mumbai Special Economic Zone (NMSEZ). The Ulwe Coastal Road represents a critical piece of the wider urban mobility network planned for Navi Mumbai. It forms part of a broader vision to create a multi-modal transport grid that integrates road, rail, and maritime infrastructure to support balanced regional growth. Urban planners highlight that such connectivity projects not only enhance commuter convenience but also attract investment and catalyse sustainable urban expansion.

From an engineering standpoint, the corridor incorporates advanced construction technologies such as prefabricated vertical drains and stone column reinforcements to stabilise the soft coastal soil. Rock fill materials sourced from the airport site have been reused, reflecting a resource-efficient approach to construction. In keeping with contemporary sustainable design principles, the project also prioritises road safety and environmental responsibility. Energy-efficient LED streetlights, anti-crash barriers, and a proposed intelligent traffic management system are being integrated to ensure smooth and safe travel.

When operational, the Ulwe Coastal Road is expected to transform connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by offering a direct, high-speed route from the harbour bridge to the airport. For local communities and businesses, this translates into improved accessibility, shorter commutes, and reduced vehicular emissions due to fewer traffic bottlenecks. As the project moves towards completion, it reinforces Navi Mumbai’s positioning as a modern, well-planned city built on principles of efficiency, inclusivity, and sustainability. The coastal corridor will serve as both a mobility lifeline and a model of infrastructure that balances engineering ambition with environmental sensitivity.
