The development of the Ulwe Coastal Road, a key infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, has reached a significant milestone with 40 percent of the 6.7 km stretch completed.
The project, spearheaded by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco), is expected to be a game-changer for urban mobility, providing seamless access from Amra Marg to the Atal Setu (MTHL) junction at Shivajinagar. Designed as a six-lane road, the Ulwe Coastal Road includes an elevated airport link spanning 0.903 km. This elevated stretch is strategically positioned to fly over the Nerul-Uran Suburban Railway line and Amra Marg (NH 348 A), ultimately landing within the airport premises. The road’s design aims to facilitate efficient traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support the commercial viability of the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The 60-meter-wide road project, estimated at Rs 1,591 crore, is more than just a connectivity enhancement—it represents a critical component of Mumbai’s broader urban development strategy. With the airport nearing completion, the Ulwe Coastal Road is set to become the backbone of the region’s transport network, significantly reducing travel time and boosting economic activities in Navi Mumbai. The road project was initiated in January 2024, with a target completion date set for September 2026. To date, Rs 528 crore has been allocated, with the revised budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 proposing an additional Rs 628 crore. The remaining expenditure will be covered in the 2026-27 fiscal year, ensuring the project’s financial sustainability.
The construction is divided into two main phases. The first phase, covering 3.8 km, includes the elevated airport link and a section of Amra Marg. This segment is being executed by a joint venture formed by two leading construction firms, with an estimated cost of Rs 679 crore. The second phase, spanning 2.9 km from the end of Amra Marg to the Atal Setu junction, is being handled by one of the firms from the joint venture, with an estimated cost of Rs 912 crore. Environmental clearances have played a crucial role in advancing the project. Cidco has secured Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) and forest clearances, with the Bombay High Court granting permission for the removal of mangroves in January 2024.
