ULIP Achieves 100 Crore API Milestone in India Logistics Sector

The Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), a flagship initiative under the National Logistics Policy (NLP), has crossed a monumental milestone, processing over 100 crore API transactions, according to a recent statement by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. This remarkable achievement underscores ULIP’s growing role in reshaping India’s logistics sector into a more efficient, technology-driven ecosystem.Launched in September 2022 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ULIP aims to modernise India’s logistics infrastructure by facilitating seamless integration across various services.

Designed to connect multiple stakeholders in the logistics value chain including transporters, ports, customs authorities, and logistics service providers the platform has already integrated 43 systems from 11 ministries through 129 APIs. With over 1,800 data fields covered, ULIP is poised to streamline operations across road, rail, air, and sea transport sectors. The impact of ULIP is significant not only in terms of operational efficiency but also in fostering inclusivity. It has become a vital tool for businesses of all sizes, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and start-ups, bridging critical data gaps that previously existed within the logistics framework. The platform processes over 1 crore API transactions weekly, facilitating real-time cargo tracking, regulatory compliance, and automation. These capabilities help businesses optimise their operations, reduce costs, and improve supply chain management.Industry leaders in manufacturing, such as Prism Johnson, Asian Paints, and Tata Steel, have already adopted ULIP’s APIs to automate logistics processes and enhance the efficiency of their supply chains. ULIP’s diverse range of multi-modal APIs enables businesses to manage inventory and track shipments in real-time, helping them avoid delays and cut costs. This level of integration is especially beneficial for large-scale manufacturers with complex logistical requirements.
In addition to improving operational efficiency, ULIP has also contributed to India’s sustainability goals. By offering eco-friendly transport options, businesses can now align their logistics operations with the country’s carbon reduction targets. Notable companies like Century Plywoods and TCIL have leveraged the platform to choose greener transport options, furthering India’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Logistics service providers and transporters, such as Cuttack Carriers, Road Pilot, and Intugine, are using ULIP to digitise documentation, automate gate processes, and facilitate smoother freight movement. These capabilities have significantly eased congestion at key logistics hubs, such as ports and freight terminals, leading to reduced turnaround times and smoother cargo flows. The government has also embraced ULIP, with both central and state departments utilising the platform to enhance decision-making and improve logistics planning. The platform’s data-driven interface is helping government officials make more informed, accurate decisions regarding infrastructure development and resource allocation. This level of transparency is key in ensuring that logistics operations across the country remain efficient and responsive to the needs of businesses and the public alike. With over 1,300 registered companies and more than 350 agreements signed, ULIP is playing a crucial role in realising India’s vision of becoming a global logistics leader. As part of the government’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” initiative and “Make in India” programme, ULIP is a key enabler of industrial growth, providing the digital infrastructure needed to modernise logistics operations across the country.ULIP is operated by NICDC Logistics Data Services Ltd. (NLDSL), a joint venture between the Government of India and NEC Corporation of Japan. NLDSL has been instrumental in driving the digital transformation of India’s logistics sector by introducing innovative solutions such as the Logistics Data Bank (LDB) and ULIP.

These solutions have greatly enhanced the efficiency, transparency, and digitalisation of logistics operations across India, ensuring that the sector remains competitive on the global stage. As India moves forward with its ambitious logistics reforms, ULIP’s success marks a crucial step towards building a more integrated, tech-enabled, and sustainable logistics ecosystem. With continued investment and adoption, the platform is expected to play an increasingly pivotal role in supporting India’s economic growth and global trade ambitions.
