UK Government and MMRDA Sign MoU to Enhance Mumbai’s 14-Line Metro Network
In a groundbreaking move to reshape Mumbai’s urban landscape, the UK government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) have entered into a strategic partnership to expand Mumbai’s metro network. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, aims to bring substantial improvements to Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure.
This agreement, formalised during the World Economic Forum, marks the beginning of an exciting new phase in the city’s metro development. The collaboration focuses on the construction of a 14-line metro network, designed to accommodate the rapid urbanisation of Mumbai and set a new benchmark for urban infrastructure in India. The project will span a total of 337 kilometres, with 59 kilometres already operational, including underground sections. Once completed, it is expected to dramatically improve urban connectivity and transform Mumbai’s public transport system, benefitting millions of commuters. The MoU between the UK Department for Transport (DfT), Crossrail International (CI), and MMRDA includes several transformative initiatives, such as the development of intermodal transport systems, the adoption of sustainable funding models like Land Value Capture (LVC), and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). The partnership also emphasises global knowledge exchange between academic institutions and professional bodies in India and the UK.
UK entities such as Transport for London, Network Rail, and UK Export Finance will contribute their expertise, ensuring the successful delivery of the metro expansion project. Drawing on the UK’s extensive experience with large-scale infrastructure projects such as London’s Crossrail, this collaboration promises to infuse Mumbai’s metro expansion with cutting-edge solutions and sustainable practices. With the involvement of UK partners, the project is set to incorporate the latest advancements in technology and design, ultimately contributing to Mumbai’s long-term urban growth.
