UDF Escalates Opposition to Kinfra Water Supply Project, Raises Concerns Over Drinking Water Shortage

In a strategic move, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has intensified its protest against the proposed 45 million litres per day (mld) water supply project initiated by Kinfra at Aluva. The UDF, led by DCC President Mohammad Shiyas, has announced a series of agitations aimed at highlighting the Government’s alleged negligence towards the vital 190mld drinking water project for the citizens of Kochi city.

Drinking Water Project

Shiyas emphasised the contrast between the Government’s priorities, asserting that while the UDF’s 190mld project for the common people in Kochi was thwarted by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, the current focus on the Kinfra project for industrial purposes is alarming. He expressed concerns that the excessive use of water for industrial activities could lead to a severe scarcity of drinking water in the city. Despite the restart of the long-pending works on the Kinfra project, thanks to the Government approval, local-level action council protests have prevented its commencement. Shiyas declared that the ongoing strike will be heightened in the days ahead, signalling an escalation of the UDF’s opposition. Meanwhile, in Goa, the Rs 29-crore project at Opa Water Works in Ponda, undertaken by Bagkiya Construction, has witnessed significant progress with 60% completion. The project aims to augment water supply to Panaji by 40 MLD. The completion of four out of seven works at Opa Water Works marks a milestone in this critical water infrastructure initiative.

Shifting focus to Kerala, the UDF opposition, led by Congress, boycotted a Wayanad meeting addressing human-animal conflicts. Their demands include the removal of the forest minister, swift compensations, financial assistance, debt waivers, and improved facilities at Mananthavady Medical College. The protest in Wayanad gained momentum with day-and-night demonstrations organised by the UDF.

In Bihar, the World Bank has granted a loan for the Bihar Integrated Water Resources Management Project (BIWRMP). This initiative, under the Department of Economic Affairs, aims to enhance water resource management, complete the Western Kosi Canal Project, implement river inter-linking schemes, renovate irrigation systems, and fortify river embankments. The UDF’s strategic manoeuvres and steadfast opposition underscore the complex interplay between industrial development projects and essential civic infrastructure, raising pertinent questions about the government’s prioritisation in catering to the basic needs of its citizens.
