Tripuras Kailashahar Airport Revival Gains Momentum

To enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth, the Chief Minister of Tripura convened a crucial meeting with senior officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to discuss the revival of the defunct Kailashahar Airport in the state’s Unakoti district.

Kailashahar Airport, located approximately 120 kilometres north of the state capital Agartala, has historical roots dating back to World War II. Originally constructed to serve military purposes, the airport ceased operations in the mid-1990s due to infrastructural constraints. Reviving this facility is seen as a strategic step towards improving air connectivity in the northeastern region, which has long faced challenges related to transportation infrastructure. The Tripura government’s commitment to revitalising Kailashahar Airport is evident from its proactive approach. During a recent visit to New Delhi, the Chief Minister met with the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) to expedite the revival process.

Additionally, the state government has been in discussions with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to initiate operations under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme, aiming to make air travel affordable and accessible to the common man. The revival plan includes significant infrastructure upgrades to meet modern aviation standards. This encompasses extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft, enhancing terminal facilities, and installing necessary air traffic control systems. However, these developments are not without challenges. Acquiring additional land for runway expansion requires negotiations with local landowners, and securing funding for these projects remains a critical concern.

Reviving Kailashahar Airport is expected to have far-reaching economic and social implications. Improved air connectivity will facilitate easier access to major cities like Kolkata and Guwahati, thereby boosting trade and tourism. The airport’s revival is also anticipated to create employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly, contributing to the region’s overall development. In line with the government’s focus on sustainable development, the airport’s revival plans incorporate environmentally friendly practices. Efforts are being made to minimise ecological impact during construction and operation phases. The integration of green technologies and adherence to environmental regulations will ensure that the development aligns with broader goals of ecological conservation.

The revival of Kailashahar Airport represents a pivotal step towards enhancing regional connectivity, promoting tourism, and fostering economic growth in Tripura. While challenges remain, the collaborative efforts between the state government and AAI officials underscore a shared commitment to transforming the region’s infrastructure landscape. As plans progress, the successful operationalisation of Kailashahar Airport could serve as a model for similar initiatives across India’s northeastern states, contributing to the nation’s broader objectives of inclusive and sustainable development.
