Tripura to host Northeasts first 800 MW PSP as NHPC advances

Tripura is set to host the Northeast region’s first 800 MW Pumped Storage Project (PSP), a landmark initiative by the Union government-run National Hydro Power Corporation of India (NHPC). This significant development, announced by Tripura’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath, promises to revolutionise the state’s energy landscape, ensuring grid stability and accelerating the integration of clean energy for a sustainable and eco-friendly future across the region.

The commissioning of this PSP in Tripura’s Dhalai district aligns with the Union Ministry of Power’s guidelines for such projects, underscoring a strategic national push towards robust energy storage solutions. Pumped storage technology is crucial for balancing the intermittency of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, allowing surplus power generated during off-peak hours to be stored and then released during periods of high demand. This capability is vital for maintaining grid reliability and reducing reliance on conventional, often fossil-fuel-based, power plants, thereby contributing to lower carbon emissions.

During the 29th North Eastern Region Power Committee meeting in Guwahati, Minister Nath strongly opposed a proposal to increase gas prices for the OTPC Palatana power project. He argued that such a hike would impose a substantial financial burden on consumers across the entire Northeast, successfully compelling the committee to reject the proposal. This stance highlights a commitment to ensuring affordable electricity for all citizens, a critical component of building equitable and sustainable cities where access to essential services is not economically prohibitive.

The Tripura Power Minister also emphasised the state’s diligent efforts to accelerate the implementation of clean and green energy initiatives, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Tripura has already made significant strides in solar energy, with approximately 45,000 solar street lights, 4,900 solar pumps, 215 solar micro-grids, 3 MW of solar rooftops, and 2 MW of off-grid solar power installed, collectively generating 26 MW of solar power. These decentralised solutions empower local communities and contribute to energy independence.

The exploration of integrating battery energy storage systems with renewable energy to ensure power availability during peak hours further underscores Tripura’s forward-thinking approach. By utilising surplus renewable energy generated during daytime and off-peak hours, the state aims to build a resilient and self-sufficient power system. These initiatives, coupled with the upcoming PSP, are pivotal for achieving net-zero carbon emissions, enhancing the quality of life, and fostering gender-neutral economic opportunities across the Northeast, leveraging its rich natural resources and social capital for a prosperous and sustainable future.
