Tripura plans seaplane service to boost Dumboor Lake tourism

Tripura is preparing to launch India’s first seaplane service in the Northeast, connecting the serene Narikel Kunja resort on Dumboor Lake to the broader national air grid. The proposal, currently under central review, could become a turning point in sustainable tourism and last-mile connectivity for the state. The proposed service aims to introduce water-based aircraft operations on Dumboor Lake, a 41-square-kilometre freshwater body in Dhalai district.

Surrounded by dense forests and hilly terrain, the lake is home to the Narikel Kunja island resort—a state-run eco-tourism project that has steadily grown in popularity among nature tourists, wellness travellers, and adventure seekers. As per state authorities, discussions have already been initiated with the Union Ministries of Civil Aviation and Tourism to explore technical assistance and financial support. The goal is to conduct detailed feasibility studies, acquire suitable seaplane models, and construct floating jetties and basic terminal infrastructure without disrupting the fragile lake ecosystem.

At the heart of the plan is the integration of this service into the UDAN scheme and the PM Gati Shakti Master Plan, both of which aim to democratise air travel and fast-track infrastructure in under-connected regions. Dhalai, being one of Tripura’s tribal-dominated and economically marginalised districts, is expected to benefit from improved access, increased tourist footfall, and a boost to the local economy through homestays, artisanal products, and hospitality services. Officials working on the initiative said the project draws inspiration from Gujarat’s Sabarmati–Statue of Unity seaplane corridor. Tripura seeks to replicate and localise that success by utilising short take-off and landing aircraft such as the Twin Otter—well-suited for regional operations on inland water bodies. The aircraft will complement existing airstrips and roadways, especially in areas with topographical or infrastructural limitations.

While the promise of enhanced connectivity and eco-tourism is compelling, the proposal has invited scrutiny from environmental experts. Dumboor Lake is a biodiversity-rich zone and any intervention will need to comply with strict conservation guidelines. The state’s Pollution Control Board and forest department are already collaborating to evaluate the ecological viability of the project. Authorities have committed to aligning with sustainable development goals and ensuring minimal disruption to the lake’s aquatic habitat. Stakeholders believe the initiative could transform Tripura into a benchmark for innovative mobility and sustainable tourism in the Northeast. By strategically linking hard-to-reach destinations, the state aims to position itself on the national tourism map while offering a low-emission alternative to traditional travel routes.

If approved, groundwork is expected to begin by early 2026, setting the stage for Tripura’s emergence as an air-linked eco-tourism destination. The move, though ambitious, represents a rare convergence of modern infrastructure with inclusive and green development, and may signal a broader shift in how India connects its remote landscapes.
