The Tripunithura municipality has launched ambitious initiatives aimed at sustainable and eco-friendly waste disposal practices. Under its new strategies, the municipality is distributing biobins to households at a heavily subsidized rate, marking a significant step towards enhancing local waste management capabilities.
“We are making biobins available to residents at just Rs 180, a nominal fee considering their actual cost of Rs 1,800, with a substantial 90% subsidy,” revealed a municipal official. This move aims to ensure that every household within Tripunithura can access and utilize these bins effectively for segregating and managing biodegradable waste. Moreover, the municipality is expanding its Thumburmuzhi model waste management systems, known for their aerobic composting capabilities, across its jurisdiction. These systems have already demonstrated success, particularly highlighted by the efficient conversion of post-festival biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich manure suitable for agricultural purposes last year. Currently, the bulk waste generated by commercial buildings in Tripunithura, amounting to over 3 tonnes per day, is managed by a private firm based in Thiruvananthapuram. This outsourcing arrangement ensures streamlined waste collection and disposal practices, contributing to the municipality’s overall waste management goals.
Looking ahead, Tripunithura has proposed the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Mekkara, Thrippunithura, underscoring its commitment to comprehensive waste and water management solutions. The local body has earmarked 1.5 acres of land for this crucial infrastructure project, which is currently under consideration by the irrigation department. “This STP project aligns with our vision to integrate sustainable practices into our waste management framework, ensuring environmental stewardship and community well-being,” emphasized a municipal representative. The initiatives undertaken by Tripunithura municipality reflect a proactive approach towards environmental sustainability and resource conservation. By fostering community participation and leveraging innovative waste management technologies, Tripunithura sets a commendable example for other urban centres striving to achieve greener, more resilient communities amidst growing environmental challenges.
