Tripunithura’s Green Initiative New Waste Management Plan

The Tripunithura municipality has unveiled new strategies aimed at becoming self-sufficient in handling biodegradable waste. This initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance waste management practices and reduce the municipality’s reliance on external waste disposal services.

One of the cornerstone strategies introduced by the municipality is the distribution of biobins to residents at a substantially subsidised rate. These biobins, which typically cost Rs 1,800, are being offered for just Rs 180, representing a 90% subsidy. This measure is designed to ensure that every household within the municipality can access these waste management tools, promoting widespread adoption of eco-friendly practices. A municipal official emphasised, “We are providing biobins at a heavily discounted price to ensure that every household in the municipality can access them.” In addition to the biobin distribution, the Tripunithura municipality has committed to increasing the number of Thumburmuzhi model (aerobic bin) waste management systems within its jurisdiction. The success of four existing facilities has demonstrated the efficacy of these systems. “Last year, after the Onam celebrations, we successfully converted a large amount of biodegradable waste into manure for agricultural use,” noted KK Pradeep, the vice-chairman of the local body. Currently, a private company based in Thiruvananthapuram manages the municipality’s bulk waste, which exceeds 3 tonnes per day from commercial buildings. However, with the new strategies in place, the municipality aims to significantly reduce this dependency by managing a larger portion of its waste internally.

Furthering its commitment to sustainable practices, the municipality has submitted a proposal to the irrigation department for the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Mekkara, Thrippunithura. The local body has allocated 1.5 acres of its land for this project, which is expected to enhance the municipality’s capacity to treat sewage and further improve waste management practices. These initiatives reflect Tripunithura’s proactive approach to waste management, highlighting the municipality’s dedication to environmental sustainability. By adopting innovative waste management strategies and promoting community involvement, Tripunithura is setting a benchmark for other municipalities in the region. The successful implementation of these measures will not only reduce the environmental impact of waste but also foster a culture of sustainability and responsibility among residents. The Tripunithura municipality’s efforts to distribute biobins, increase aerobic bin systems, and develop a new sewage treatment plant underscore its commitment to creating a greener, cleaner community. These steps are a testament to the municipality’s forward-thinking approach and its dedication to achieving long-term environmental sustainabilit
