Trident Agrocom and Man Infraconstruction Win Agri-Processing and Storage Project at JN Port to Boost Agro Trade

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has awarded a landmark agri-processing and storage project to a consortium of Trident Agrocom Exports Pvt Ltd and Man Infraconstruction Ltd. The project, which is valued at approximately Rs 284.19 crore, will be developed on a 27-acre land parcel within the port complex, marking a major step towards streamlining India’s agricultural exports and improving storage and processing facilities.

Set to be operational within the next three years, the facility will have the capacity to handle around 1.2 million tonnes of cargo annually. This new infrastructure is expected to address long-standing challenges in India’s agricultural supply chain, such as wastage, logistical inefficiencies, and multiple handling of commodities, which contribute to significant losses in perishable goods like onions, grapes, and other agricultural products.

The facility will be a one-stop solution for the processing, sorting, packing, storage, and regulatory certification of agricultural commodities, a service model that mirrors best practices seen at global ports like Rotterdam, Shanghai, and Jebel Ali. By integrating these services under one roof, the new facility will not only support local farmers and exporters in Maharashtra but will also cater to neighbouring regions like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and even the Northeast of India, as well as countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. The project is expected to greatly reduce inefficiencies in India’s agricultural logistics system, which currently suffers from subpar storage, poor handling processes, and long waiting times at ports. With technological interventions, the new facility aims to drastically reduce the 7.7% annual wastage of agricultural goods caused by inefficient processes. This is particularly important for perishable items that account for nearly 3% of the loss due to inadequate storage facilities.

By facilitating better handling and storage, the facility is also poised to improve the shelf life of agricultural products, thus reducing rejection rates at the borders and ensuring better quality control. This will ultimately contribute to more efficient export-import procedures, reducing costs for both exporters and importers. Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of JNPA, emphasised the project’s importance by stating, “Being an agrarian nation, we have studied all the agro facilities in India, and we could not find under one roof all the processing of all types of agro fresh products and storage available. This facility at JN Port will change that.”

A key highlight of the facility will be its commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. The development will avoid encroachment on floodplain areas, ensuring that the project does not harm the natural ecosystem. Moreover, the coastal route services offered by JNPA will be leveraged to move products such as onions and grapes more efficiently to domestic and international markets. In terms of long-term growth, the facility is expected to attract agricultural cargo that is currently being diverted to Gujarat ports, such as Hazira, Mundra, and Pipavav. As JNPA handled 14% of India’s agro export-import trade in FY23, the new infrastructure will strengthen its position as a key player in the country’s agricultural logistics network.

Beyond its immediate logistical benefits, the new agro-processing and storage facility could indirectly influence tourism in the region. As the project enhances the country’s agricultural export capabilities, it opens doors to showcasing India’s rich agro-based exports to international markets, potentially attracting tourists interested in India’s growing agri-tourism scene. Furthermore, areas around the port may see an increase in tourism-related activities as the enhanced infrastructure brings more international business and visitors to the region. Following the project’s approval, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will proceed with site surveys, ensuring the feasibility and proper implementation of the agri-facility. Local authorities are also working to ensure the seamless integration of this new infrastructure into the broader transportation network, enhancing both domestic trade and tourism opportunities in the region. This project, which represents a pioneering initiative in India’s agri-logistics landscape, will contribute significantly to the nation’s economy and bolster its position as a leading agricultural exporter.
