Travellers Push for Restart of Pune Airport Assistance

The discontinuation of the paid assistance service at Pune Airport has sparked a wave of discontent among travellers. The service, which was introduced by Chennai-based Global Flight Handling Services Private Limited in 2021, offered to aid passengers with baggage handling and check-in for a fee of Rs200. However, the facility was halted approximately seven months ago, leading to increasing calls for its reinstatement.

The service was designed to provide a smoother travel experience, particularly for elderly passengers and those with special needs. Affected traveller, a working professional from Vimannagar, expressed frustration upon discovering that the service had been suspended. “I was hoping to book this facility for my elderly parents, who are travelling out of Pune. Such assistance is crucial and should be made available,” he lamented.

The airport director explained that the cessation of the service was not a directive from the airport authorities but rather a decision made by the service provider due to low demand. “The company decided to discontinue the service after not receiving the anticipated response. We are currently in the process of revamping the service and have issued a tender for its restart. We aim to launch an enhanced version soon,” he stated. The service, which had been well-received at other airports across India, included support from young staff who assisted passengers near the departure and arrival gates. Despite the discontinuation, the company’s social media page still indicates ongoing operations at Pune Airport. However, calls and emails to the company for clarification on the service’s status have remained unanswered.

Travellers have underscored the need for the reinstated service, particularly with the upcoming festival season expected to increase airport traffic. The distance between the parking area and the terminal, coupled with expected crowds during Navratri and Diwali, has heightened the demand for such assistance. Frequent flyers, who found the service invaluable, are urging the airport authorities to expedite the relaunch. “The paid assistance service significantly eased the travel process. It’s crucial that the airport authorities prioritise its revival to support passengers, especially during peak travel periods,” noted a businessman from Koregaon Park. The airport’s efforts to address the service gap and introduce an improved version are eagerly awaited by the travelling public.
