Train Services Hit On Bhusawal-Mumbai Line After Goods Train Derails Near Nandgaon

Train services on the busy Bhusawal–Mumbai Central Railway corridor were thrown into disarray this morning after a freight train derailed near Nandgaon railway station in Nashik district. The incident, involving an empty goods train travelling towards Daund, caused significant delays to several premium long-distance trains, including the Delhi–Mumbai Rajdhani Express, the Sachkhand Express, and the Duronto Express.

According to railway officials, the derailment occurred on an important section of the route, which carries both heavy passenger traffic and substantial freight movement. Emergency response teams, including technical experts and track maintenance crews, reached the site within minutes, launching repair operations on a war footing. The affected wagons were cleared, and damaged track components were replaced swiftly to ensure minimal disruption to rail operations. By late afternoon, services were gradually restored, with both up and down lines operational. While the derailment caused cascading delays to trains across the network, officials maintained that the rapid response helped avert prolonged service suspension. Railway authorities have ordered an investigation into the cause of the derailment, focusing on track conditions, rolling stock health, and operational protocols.

For passengers, the disruption meant extended waiting times at key stations along the route, with some trains held up for hours. The incident underscored the pressure on India’s rail infrastructure, particularly on high-density corridors where both freight and passenger services compete for track time. Rail experts note that while derailments involving freight trains carrying hazardous cargo could have severe safety and environmental consequences, even incidents involving empty wagons can lead to large-scale delays and operational challenges. The Bhusawal–Mumbai section is a critical link in Maharashtra’s rail network, connecting major commercial hubs and serving as a vital artery for the movement of goods, particularly agricultural produce, industrial materials, and consumer goods. Disruptions on this route have a direct impact on both regional trade and passenger convenience. With freight services being a backbone of economic supply chains, railway planners face the challenge of balancing efficiency with safety, especially as demand on the network continues to rise.

Officials emphasised that track inspection and rolling stock maintenance are being strengthened, in line with national initiatives to modernise India’s railway system. While the incident has raised questions about infrastructure resilience, it also highlighted the capability of ground teams to respond effectively under pressure. With normal operations restored, passengers are being urged to check updated train schedules before travel to avoid inconvenience.
