Traffic Modifications and Parking Arrangements for Kaanum Pongal in Chennai on January 16
As Chennai gears up for the festive celebrations of Kaanum Pongal on January 16, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have implemented a series of traffic diversions and designated parking spots to manage the large influx of visitors to popular locations such as Marina Beach. With thousands expected to converge on Kamarajar Salai, the GCTP has devised a plan to ensure smooth traffic flow while minimising disruption to public transport and residential areas.
The key modifications are centred around Kamarajar Salai, a prominent stretch adjacent to Marina Beach. During peak traffic hours, when the vehicle flow increases significantly, the police will implement diversions to ensure better control. Vehicles approaching Kamarajar Salai from the War Memorial side will be allowed to proceed towards the Lighthouse as usual. However, vehicles coming from the Lighthouse towards the War Memorial will be diverted at Kannagi Statue. They will then be directed to take a left turn onto Bharathi Salai, proceeding towards Bells Road Junction, and Victoria Hostel Road, in order to reach their destination.
In a bid to streamline traffic further, the police have announced one-way systems for certain roads. For instance, Victoria Hostel Road and Bells Road will operate as one-way streets with entry from Bharathi Salai Junction. There will be no entry allowed for vehicles from Wallajah Salai junction onto these roads. Similarly, Bharathi Salai will also function as a one-way from Kannagi Statue towards the Bharathi Salai Junction, with no entry allowed from the opposite direction. These measures are expected to help ease congestion and maintain smoother vehicular movement during the busy festival day.
To further alleviate parking pressures, particularly for those visiting Marina Beach, the Chennai Police have designated numerous parking spaces across the city. Visitors can park their vehicles at 14 key locations, including Foreshore Road, Victoria Warden Hostel, Kalaivanar Arangam Parking, Presidency College, Madras University, Adams Road beyond DD Kendra, and several others. The police have made special provisions for the parking of police vehicles inside the Secretariat, ensuring that traffic and security operations are not compromised.
