Traffic Advisory Issued for Ed Sheeran Concert as Chennai Braces for Heavy Crowds
With global pop sensation Ed Sheeran set to perform in Chennai on 5 February, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has issued a detailed traffic advisory to manage the anticipated surge in vehicular movement around YMCA Grounds, Nandanam. Given the scale of the event, which is expected to draw thousands of music enthusiasts, traffic diversions have been put in place to ensure smooth vehicular movement and pedestrian safety. Auto-rickshaws and cabs from Teynampet ferrying concertgoers will be required to follow a designated route via Cenotaph Road, Gandhi Mandapam Road, and Chamiers Road before reaching the venue through Lotus Colony 2nd Street. Meanwhile, vehicles arriving from Saidapet will proceed via Nandanam Junction, take a U-turn on Chamiers Road, and reach the designated drop-off point.
To streamline access to the venue, only VVIP pass holders and artists’ vehicles will be permitted entry through YMCA’s main entrance and the Cosmopolitan Gate on Anna Salai. The GCTP has strongly advised concertgoers to rely on public transportation, including the Chennai Metro, MTC buses, and MRTS trains, to prevent congestion. This advisory comes in response to previous large-scale events where severe traffic bottlenecks disrupted mobility in key areas of Chennai. With metro stations and bus stops located within walking distance of YMCA, authorities hope to minimise the number of private vehicles near the venue, ensuring a smoother experience for attendees. The event’s organisers have also been urged to implement efficient crowd management strategies to prevent logistical challenges on the day of the concert.
