Toyota Unveils New Electrified SUV Plans for India 2025
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) is set to introduce two electrified SUV models in India this year, marking a pivotal shift in its sustainable mobility strategy.
The company will launch an all-electric Urban Cruiser in the fourth quarter and a mild-hybrid Fortuner in June. TKM, a key player in India’s hybrid segment for over 15 years, is now expanding its portfolio with both full-electric and mild-hybrid technologies. The all-electric Urban Cruiser, developed as a corporate sibling to the Maruti e-Vitara, will be available in standard and long-range variants. It features a modern front-end design inspired by a hammerhead shark and is expected to deliver over 400 km and 500 km range, respectively, for each variant.
The standard-range version is expected to come with a 105.8 kW motor and a 47.8 kWh LFP battery, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds. The long-range model will likely feature a 128 kW motor paired with a 59.8 kWh battery, capable of reaching the same top speed of 150 km/h but achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds. In a parallel move, the Fortuner Mild-Hybrid will retain its diesel base with a 2.8-litre turbocharged engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, but incorporate a belt-integrated starter generator (BSG), a 48V lithium-ion battery, and a DC/DC converter. The hybrid system will provide up to 12 kW of additional power and 65 Nm of torque, improving acceleration and fuel efficiency. Toyota has placed the 48V battery under the rear seats of the Fortuner, enabling energy recovery during deceleration. This energy will be used to support the vehicle’s electronics and improve overall efficiency without compromising performance. The engine itself delivers 150 kW and 500 Nm torque.
With both models reflecting Toyota’s global shift towards greener vehicles, this launch aligns with India’s growing demand for electric and hybrid options and contributes to the country’s net-zero ambitions.
