Torrent Power Q2 Profit Rises 13% as Renewables Lift Growth

Torrent Power reported a 13% year-on-year rise in consolidated profit after tax to Rs 837.96 crore for the September quarter of FY27, with stronger distribution and renewable energy performance helping drive growth despite higher finance costs from increased borrowings.

The company’s profit after tax stood at Rs 741.55 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Consolidated revenue from operations increased 24% to Rs 9,801.58 crore from Rs 7,876 crore a year earlier, indicating a substantial expansion in the company’s operating base during the quarter.

Profit before tax remained unchanged at Rs 1,130.73 crore, and the company reported no exceptional items during the period. The difference between the rise in profit after tax and flat profit before tax reflects the importance of the company’s operating performance and financing costs in shaping the final result.

Torrent Power reported 29% growth in adjusted EBITDA during the quarter. According to the company, the improvement was driven by its distribution and renewable energy businesses, along with the consolidation of its Nabha acquisition. The company’s results therefore combine performance from its existing utility operations with contributions from recently added or commissioned assets.

The company said improved operational performance across its distribution businesses and higher plant load factors in its renewable portfolio supported earnings. It also attributed part of the improvement to contributions from newly commissioned projects and the Nabha acquisition.

The reference to distribution performance is significant for the utility business because distribution operations connect generation and supply capacity to electricity consumers. The company did not provide further operating details in the report about consumer numbers, electricity volumes, tariffs or service-area performance for the quarter.

Adjusted EBITDA also included Rs 54 crore in principal recovery related to Nabha. This component formed part of the reported adjusted EBITDA growth and is separate from the company’s description of improved operational performance across distribution and renewable energy businesses.

At the same time, Torrent Power said higher borrowings increased finance costs. While revenue and adjusted EBITDA grew during the quarter, the unchanged profit before tax indicates that financing expenses affected the extent to which operating gains translated into pre-tax profit.

The results highlight the combination of three business factors in the company’s latest quarter: distribution operations, renewable generation performance and the financial contribution of the Nabha acquisition. They also show the balance between expansion-led earnings growth and the cost of funding that expansion.

Torrent Power’s reported figures for the September quarter are Rs 837.96 crore in consolidated profit after tax, Rs 9,801.58 crore in consolidated revenue from operations and Rs 1,130.73 crore in profit before tax. The company’s statement identified operational performance, renewable plant load factors, newly commissioned projects and Nabha consolidation as the principal contributors to the quarter’s earnings.
