Mumbai’s urban infrastructure is set to witness a significant enhancement with the imminent opening of the four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) between Titwala and Khadavli railway stations, part of the Central Railway’s Mumbai Division. The project, nearing completion, is poised to streamline traffic flow and improve suburban train punctuality in the region.

The construction of this pivotal bridge, executed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (MRIDC), also known as MahaRail, is a crucial component of the Kalyan Ring Road project. Connecting Ambivali to Kalyan via the famous Shree Siddhivinayak Ganesh Mandir at Titwala, the new bridge aims to provide smoother, uninterrupted traffic for commuters in the area. The bridge spans 820 metres, with four lanes designed to replace the existing level crossing gates that are notorious for causing delays. According to MahaRail officials, the existing level crossings, which open and close more than 25 times a day, delay around 50 trains by 5 to 10 minutes each. The new ROB is expected to eliminate these delays, significantly improving train service punctuality.

Costing approximately ₹100.06 crore, the ROB boasts a state-of-the-art design, including cutting-edge crash barriers integrated with stainless steel utility ducts. This innovative three-tier duct system will facilitate safe assembly, inspection, repair, and replacement of essential utilities like electric cables while enhancing the aesthetics of the bridge. Additionally, the structure will feature LED streetlights for enhanced visibility at night, as well as remotely controlled, theme-based decorative LED arches, contributing to both functionality and visual appeal. Service roads on either side of the bridge will ensure easy access for local commuters, further improving connectivity. The removal of the old level crossing gates will bring immense relief to road users by ensuring uninterrupted traffic movement, cutting down congestion, and enhancing safety.

The completion of the ROB is expected to address long-standing connectivity issues for residents of Titwala, providing faster and safer access to key areas of the city. “This project will ease congestion, promote smoother traffic flow, and contribute significantly to the city’s ongoing infrastructure development,” an MRIDC official noted. MahaRail’s use of advanced technologies such as Digital Surface Models (DSM) and Digital Elevation Models (DEM) ensured precise planning and construction despite the challenges posed by the dense traffic in the area. The successful implementation of these techniques reflects the strategic planning behind the project, which is poised to enhance overall commuter experience and strengthen the region’s transport infrastructure.
