Tiruchi To Divert Heavy Vehicles To Panjapur Terminal To Ease Traffic Flow

Tiruchi City Municipal Corporation has initiated the diversion of heavy transport vehicles to the newly inaugurated truck terminal in Panjapur. The terminal, strategically located along the Tiruchi–Madurai Highway, is expected to serve as a dedicated facility for truck movement, parking, and logistical operations, easing pressure on arterial roads.

The civic administration has formally approached the city’s traffic police to support enforcement and ensure compliance by truck operators. According to senior officials from the Corporation, consistent traffic snarls caused by goods carriers in the central business districts have disrupted both pedestrian and vehicular movement. The Panjapur facility is being positioned as a long-term solution to the issue, offering an organised hub for freight vehicles. Spread over 13.09 acres near the city’s Integrated Bus Terminus, the truck terminal has been developed at a cost of ₹110.97 crore. It is equipped to handle 246 trucks simultaneously—including 231 two-axle vehicles and a mix of higher-axle configurations. The space is digitally monitored, with entry and exit logs maintained for all vehicles, and a user charge will be levied on truckers for access to the facility.

More than just a parking space, the Panjapur terminal has been designed as an urban logistics centre with driver welfare at its core. It includes dormitories with 84 beds across two floors, potable water supply, and well-maintained sanitation blocks—comprising over 50 toilets, 34 urinals, and multiple bathrooms catering to men, women, and persons with disabilities. Additionally, a commercial complex within the terminal features 79 shops that will be leased out through public tender, with rental rates fixed at ₹132 per sq ft. Officials believe this blend of logistical infrastructure and commercial activity will enhance the utility and sustainability of the space, while also generating non-tax revenue for the Corporation.

Urban planners and transport experts have welcomed the move, noting that the decentralisation of truck movement is essential for Tier II cities like Tiruchi that are experiencing steady growth. The presence of such infrastructure also reflects the city’s push towards more structured and environmentally sustainable urban planning practices. With coordination from the traffic police and cooperation from transporters, the civic body hopes to institutionalise the use of the Panjapur terminal. If successful, the model could be replicated in other fast-expanding urban centres across Tamil Nadu.
