The Tiruchi Municipal Corporation is set to establish a construction and demolition waste recycling plant in the city to address the surge in development of new properties. The facility, which will be able to process 50 tonne of waste per day, will be located on three acres of land in Panjapur near the integrated bus terminus on the city’s outskirts. The recycling plant will scientifically collect, process and reuse building debris in the city.
According to a study, the city generates around 25 tonne of construction waste and debris daily. The recycling plant will help solve the indiscriminate dumping of construction waste in water bodies and vacant spaces while generating revenue for the civic body through a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) system.
The civic body will partner with a private agency experienced in recycling construction and demolition waste to collect debris from builders and residents and transport and recycle it in the plant to produce flooring tiles and pavement blocks. The Corporation will use the products for its projects or sell them in the market. A revenue-sharing model will be employed, and the project is expected to be completed within a year.
The proposal to set up the city’s first construction waste recycling plant was first introduced in 2020 but failed to materialise due to a lack of interest among recycling plant operators. However, the Corporation is determined to establish a recycling plant to protect waterbodies and vacant plots from waste pile-up and improve Tiruchi’s cleanliness rankings.
