After months of anticipation and public inconvenience, the refurbishment of the Muttathara–Beemapally–Valiyathura coastal road in Thiruvananthapuram has been completed, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters and motorists. The Rs 7.5 crore project, funded by NABARD, was awarded in late 2024, and despite cost escalations and monsoon disruptions, the upgraded road is now fully operational.
The project, undertaken by Sree Dhanya Constructions, faced challenges as the submitted bid was 17% above the original estimate. Nevertheless, officials prioritised timely restoration of this critical coastal link, approving the higher quote to ensure commuter safety and uninterrupted connectivity. Connecting Kallumoodu near Muttathara via Beemapally to Valiyathura, the route serves as a key artery for residents, travellers accessing the city’s southern wards, and passengers heading to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The completion of this road is expected to significantly enhance mobility, reduce travel delays, and mitigate vehicle damage caused by potholes and waterlogging.
Officials confirmed that the refurbishment adheres to bituminous macadam (BM) and bituminous concrete (BC) standards, which are designed to improve road durability, provide smoother rides, and reduce maintenance requirements. These standards reflect the Kerala PWD’s ongoing strategy to upgrade urban infrastructure and promote sustainable road development. Work began in April 2025, with authorities initially aiming to complete the project before the southwest monsoon. Heavy rains temporarily slowed progress, but resurfacing, levelling, and structural reinforcement were completed in recent weeks, allowing the road to reopen fully.
Civic authorities highlighted that the upgrade not only enhances road quality but also addresses longstanding public grievances regarding traffic congestion, vehicle damage, and travel safety risks. With the road operational, commuters can expect smoother, safer, and more reliable travel, particularly during peak hours. “The completion of this road marks an important milestone in our efforts to modernise Thiruvananthapuram’s coastal infrastructure,” said a senior PWD official. “Adherence to BM and BC standards ensures longevity and resilience, reflecting our commitment to sustainable and equitable urban transport.”
Local residents have welcomed the development, noting that improved connectivity will support economic activity, enhance access to the airport, and facilitate safer travel for coastal communities. The project also aligns with broader efforts to reduce traffic-related emissions by improving traffic flow and minimizing congestion along critical urban routes. With the coastal road now reopened, authorities will continue to monitor traffic conditions, maintain infrastructure quality, and ensure that the benefits of the upgrade extend to all city commuters, supporting Thiruvananthapuram’s vision for sustainable and resilient urban mobility.
