Thiruvananthapuram Airport to Undertake Runway Upgrade Starting January 14

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is set to undergo a significant upgradation of its main runway, beginning January 14, 2025. The work, which includes essential recarpeting and enhancements to the airport’s lighting system, is scheduled to run through to March 29, 2025.

The main aim of the project is to bolster safety and operational efficiency at one of Kerala’s busiest airports. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL), which is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), will manage the recarpeting project. The existing 3,374-metre-long runway, last recarpeted in 2017, is due for this crucial upgrade to maintain its reliability and performance. The work will take place daily between 9 am and 6 pm. In order to minimise disruption, airlines operating from the airport have been informed that they will need to schedule their flights either before 9 am or after 6 pm. This adjustment is vital to ensure that daily air traffic continues to operate smoothly, with 96 air traffic movements allowed each day.

Passengers travelling through the airport during the upgrade period are advised to check with their respective airlines to stay informed about any potential changes to their flight schedules. While the runway is being resurfaced, the airport will also be upgrading its Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system. The lighting will be modernised, transitioning from halogen lights to energy-efficient LED lights, alongside improvements to the airfield signage and the installation of a stop bar light system. These enhancements will further improve the safety and efficiency of air operations at the airport. The renovation project also focuses on increasing the airport’s overall capacity, ensuring that it meets the growing demand for air travel in the region. The airport’s management team is working on a comprehensive plan to minimise disruptions and ensure that the work is carried out with as little inconvenience to passengers and airlines as possible.

For the airport’s users, this upgrade promises to be a major step forward in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the airport’s operations. The completion of this recarpeting project will not only improve the safety and reliability of the runway but also ensure that the airport can meet future aviation demands with greater operational efficiency. With these advancements, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is positioned to maintain its place as a critical hub in South India’s aviation network. Passengers are encouraged to remain vigilant about any updates during this period, as timely information from airlines will be key to ensuring a seamless travel experience. As the airport continues to grow in prominence, this significant upgrade is a reflection of its commitment to providing passengers with the highest safety standards and operational excellence
