In a move set to alleviate the burgeoning traffic congestion plaguing Thane, particularly on the vital Ghodbunder Road, a new flyover was inaugurated on Wednesday.
This infrastructure development is anticipated to provide a significant respite for daily commuters and streamline the movement of freight along this crucial artery connecting key economic hubs. The Bhayanderpada Flyover on Ghodbunder Road, a critical link connecting Thane with Gujarat, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), was officially opened, marking a tangible step towards resolving the area’s growing transportation challenges. This infrastructure upgrade is particularly significant as Ghodbunder Road serves as a vital segment of the interstate freight corridor extending from Gujarat to JNPT, underscoring its importance for regional commerce.
The newly operational flyover boasts a total ramp length of 601 metres, with the Thane end extending 391.48 metres and incorporating a 20.4-metre underpass. At the Borivali end, the flyover spans 189.88 metres. Its carriageway features a 2+2 lane configuration, with each lane measuring 7.5 metres in width, ensuring ample capacity for vehicular movement. Furthermore, the project includes dual two-lane underpasses, each 20.4 metres in length and 19.7 metres in width, designed to further segregate and streamline traffic flow. Engineered to handle a substantial traffic volume capacity of 73,333 Passenger Car Units (PCUs), the flyover is strategically built on the viaduct of the upcoming Metro Lines 4 and 4A. This innovative integration of road and metro infrastructure not only optimises land utilisation but also lays the groundwork for a more interconnected and sustainable urban transport network in the future.
Officials have highlighted that the flyover is expected to significantly ease the heavy traffic burden caused by both heavy goods vehicles and the daily influx of office commuters. By bypassing critical congestion points between the Gaimukh and Waghbil areas in Thane, the flyover promises to substantially reduce travel times for motorists, enhancing productivity and quality of life for residents. Speaking at the inauguration, a senior state official underscored the transformative impact of the project on the lives of Thane’s residents. “This project is more than just a road; it’s a transformation in lifestyle that brings relief to the people of Thane. The improvement on a crucial route like Ghodbunder Road will not only streamline traffic but also act as a catalyst for the overall development of the region. It is a great example of how reducing traffic congestion can save both time and fuel,” they stated.
Residents from Thane East, Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Brahmand, Waghbil, and Bhayanderpada are expected to be the primary beneficiaries of this infrastructure upgrade, gaining access to faster, safer, and smoother commutes. The flyover’s role as a key component of the interstate freight corridor will also have broader economic benefits, facilitating more efficient movement of goods and contributing to regional trade. In a significant step towards promoting pedestrian safety and ensuring equitable urban mobility, a dedicated pedestrian subway has been constructed beneath the flyover. This vital infrastructure allows for safe crossing of the busy road, reducing pedestrian pressure on the main carriageway and enhancing overall safety for all road users.
A senior official from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) commented on the project’s significance, stating, “The inauguration of the Bhayanderpada underpass is a significant step toward creating a sustainable and efficient transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This project will not only improve traffic flow but also boost economic and industrial activity. We are prioritising ease and safety in the daily commute of citizens.” The inauguration of the Bhayanderpada Flyover represents a crucial step forward in addressing Thane’s growing traffic challenges and fostering more sustainable urban mobility. By enhancing connectivity, reducing congestion, and prioritising safety for all road users, this infrastructure project is poised to have a significant positive impact on the daily lives of residents and the economic vitality of the region. The integration with future metro lines further underscores a commitment to long-term, eco-conscious urban development.
