Thane To Connect Bullet Train With Metro Buses Taxis Boats And More

Thane is poised to become the epicentre of India’s first fully integrated multimodal transport hub, coinciding with the launch of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train. Designed to streamline connectivity across trains, metro lines, buses, boats, taxis, and airport access roads, the hub aims to transform urban mobility, attract significant investments, and create thousands of jobs in the region. Officials emphasise that over 25% of the station area will be maintained as green zones, reinforcing sustainable urban design.

The Thane hub will integrate the bullet train with regular suburban rail, metro services, and local public transport, creating seamless transfers for commuters. City planners envision it as a comprehensive transit-oriented development model that aligns with the government’s vision of eco-friendly, gender-neutral, and accessible urban spaces. By centralising transport modes, the project also anticipates reducing road congestion and promoting low-carbon mobility options. An international conference convened last week brought together representatives from central and Maharashtra state authorities, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and local municipal bodies to plan the station’s development. Officials highlighted lessons from Japan, where high-speed rail stations have historically catalysed urban growth, encouraged private investment, and boosted employment opportunities. The collaborative planning ensures that the Thane hub is not only technologically advanced but also socially and environmentally sustainable.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor will feature 12 stations, with four in Maharashtra: Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Boisar. Development plans for Thane and Virar are being jointly prepared by municipal authorities, urban development departments, and international partners, ensuring the stations become benchmarks for urban transport planning. Officials also stressed that the project is expected to spur transit-oriented development across Maharashtra, stimulating economic activity and regional industrial growth. In addition to facilitating efficient passenger movement, the station design incorporates extensive green spaces and sustainable infrastructure, reflecting a commitment to eco-friendly urbanisation. Experts note that integrating multiple modes of transport within a single hub will improve commuter experience, reduce travel time, and enhance accessibility for diverse population groups, including women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

Industry officials expect that the high-speed rail will attract ancillary businesses, from logistics and retail to hospitality, further boosting local employment. The station is projected to become a strategic node that not only supports urban mobility but also acts as a catalyst for wider economic and social development in Thane and surrounding regions. With this initiative, Thane is set to redefine city transport infrastructure in India, providing a model that other urban centres can replicate. Officials emphasise that such developments are critical for creating sustainable, equitable, and connected cities, reducing the reliance on private vehicles, and promoting integrated urban living.
