Thane Targets Air Pollution with Construction Bans

In a decisive move to curb air pollution, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has initiated strict action against developers flouting environmental regulations. The City Development Department has ordered several developers to halt construction activities for failing to adhere to dust pollution control measures. This proactive approach underscores TMC’s commitment to maintaining air quality amidst the city’s growing urban landscape.

TMC had earlier issued directives to 317 construction sites, mandating compliance with comprehensive air pollution control guidelines. Despite these efforts, violations were identified at 182 sites, prompting immediate action. The Municipal Corporation imposed fines amounting to ₹9.25 lakh and ensured adherence to the prescribed norms. Additionally, show-cause notices were served to 120 builders, with some reporting compliance now under verification. However, stricter measures were taken against seven developers who continued to disregard the regulations. These developers, including M. Skyline Infra at Mauje Naupada and M. Saraswati Enterprises at Mouje Parsik, were issued stop-work notices between January 14 and 16 following inspections that highlighted non-compliance.

Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has emphasised the importance of adhering to the High Court’s directives on pollution control. He has instructed the Environment Department to conduct surprise inspections to ensure compliance across all construction sites. Assistant Director of Urban Planning, Sangram Kande, affirmed that work would resume for developers only after thorough verification of compliance. This action is part of a broader initiative by TMC to enforce sustainable development practices. The crackdown not only serves as a warning to errant builders but also highlights the Corporation’s prioritisation of public health and environmental preservation. Developers have been urged to implement measures to mitigate dust and ensure adherence to air quality norms, or face stringent penalties in the future.
