The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has intensified its efforts to complete essential pre-monsoon works by May 20.
These works include drain cleaning, tree pruning, and road repairs, aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of heavy rains on the city’s infrastructure and residents. In a recent meeting, the TMC Commissioner directed all relevant departments to expedite their tasks and ensure timely completion. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of coordination among various agencies to avoid waterlogging and traffic disruptions during the monsoon.
The drain cleaning campaign, which commenced in April, targets the desilting of the city’s extensive drainage network. The initiative is crucial to prevent flooding in low-lying areas and maintain the smooth flow of stormwater. Simultaneously, the TMC has undertaken a city-wide tree pruning drive to remove hazardous branches that could pose risks during storms. As of the latest reports, approximately 45% of the identified trees have been pruned, with efforts ongoing across various wards.
Road repairs are also in full swing, focusing on critical stretches prone to potholes and water accumulation. The TMC aims to complete these repairs before the onset of heavy rains to ensure safe and uninterrupted transportation for commuters. In contrast, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is facing criticism for delays in its pre-monsoon preparations. As of May 5, the BMC has completed only 56% of its drain desilting work, with the Mithi River desilting at a mere 29%. These delays have raised concerns among Mumbai residents about potential flooding and infrastructure failures during the monsoon.
The TMC’s proactive approach serves as a model for urban monsoon preparedness, highlighting the importance of timely infrastructure maintenance and inter-agency coordination. By prioritizing these essential works, Thane aims to enhance the city’s resilience against the challenges posed by the monsoon season.
