Night-time traffic restrictions will be in place across major stretches of Ghodbunder Road from June 22 to July 14, as part of the ongoing infrastructure works for Mumbai Metro Line 4. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), in collaboration with its construction partner, is set to install I & U girders and undertake T & L precast works—critical components for the elevated metro corridor in Thane.
The work is scheduled during off-peak hours between 11 PM and 4 AM, to minimise daytime disruption. However, given the density of vehicular movement on Ghodbunder Road, the Thane Traffic Police have issued an advisory outlining diversions and alternative routes to manage congestion and maintain safety in the area. Two key stretches will see active construction: from Naglabunder Signal to the Indian Oil Pump, and from Naglabunder to Bhayanderpada. These are among the most used road corridors connecting Thane to the Mumbai suburbs and western highways, making traffic coordination essential during the metro installation phase.
To facilitate girder launching near Pillar No. 85, entry for heavy vehicles will be restricted between Thane Ghodbunder Channel and Gaimukh Station. These vehicles will be redirected via a reverse loop toward Porbandar Thane Main Road, before merging back onto the route near the Indian Oil Pump at Pillar No. 102. Simultaneously, light vehicles will be allowed access through a designated service road near Pillar No. 85, before rejoining the main carriageway to reach onward destinations.Additional closures will apply to vehicles heading toward Thane from the Naglabunder–Asha Wine Shop zone, as girder activities extend along the Ghodbandar stretch. Motorists will need to detour via Pillars 72 and 73, pass Naglabunder Depot, and rejoin the highway near Lodha Splendora, ensuring that east-west movement remains viable.
Importantly, emergency and essential services—including ambulances, fire services, police, and oxygen supply vehicles—are exempted from the restrictions. The civic coordination is being led by the Thane City Traffic Department, with officials highlighting that these short-term closures are critical for the timely progress of Metro Line 4, which aims to significantly ease future travel across Thane, Mumbai, and adjoining suburbs.
The elevated Metro Line 4, when completed, will connect Wadala in Mumbai with Kasarvadavali in Thane, offering a major transit upgrade across one of the busiest suburban belts in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The corridor is expected to reduce vehicular dependency and contribute towards lower urban emissions through high-capacity electric transit. While the inconvenience of nightly restrictions may cause short-term challenges for commuters and logistics operators, authorities believe the long-term payoff—in the form of reduced congestion, faster commute times, and eco-friendly mobility—will far outweigh the disruption.
Residents and businesses along the Ghodbunder corridor have been urged to plan travel in advance and consider alternate timings to avoid peak closure periods. Officials have reiterated that traffic marshals and signage will be in place throughout the construction window to guide road users and ensure safety compliance.
