Thane Residents Alerted to Night Time Metro 4 Traffic Changes

Mumbai Metro Line 4 construction and minimise daytime disruption, Thane Municipal Corporation’s Kasarvadavali Traffic Sub-Division has issued a traffic advisory. Night‑time I‑ and U‑girder operations, along with T‑ and L‑precast work, will be conducted on Ghodbunder Road from 11 PM to 4 AM between June 22 and July 14.The advisory, endorsed by Thane City’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pankaj Shirsat, addresses two key stretches: from Nagalabunder Signal to the Indian Oil Pump, and from Nagalabunder to Bhayanderpada.

Main thoroughfares on the Thane–Ghodbunder corridor will be partially closed to heavy vehicles during these hours to enable safe construction activities and prevent traffic bottlenecks.Traffic configurations have been revised: heavy vehicles en route to Ghodbunder will be rerouted at Pillar No. 85, travelling in the opposite direction to Podbandar Thane main road, before turning right near Pillar No. 102 to rejoin the main road ahead of the Indian Oil Pump. Light vehicles bound for Gaimukh Station will be redirected via a service lane adjacent to Pillar No. 85 before merging back onto the main carriageway.

Additionally, during girder operations near Nagalabunder and close to Asha Wine Shop, entry for all vehicles towards Thane will be temporarily barred. Motorists are advised to divert via the Nagalabunder Depot zones—Pillars 72 and 73—and proceed to Lodha Splendra before rejoining Ghodbunder Road.Exemptions have been made for essential-service vehicles, including those belonging to police, fire brigade, ambulance services, and pre‑corridor oxygen transport units. The traffic restructuring exemplifies measures adopted to ensure that critical transport infrastructure projects progress with minimal urban disturbance. Thane authorities believe that night‑hour operations will ease congestion during peak hours and maintain mobility for daily commuters and local residents.

Public transport operators, ride-sharing services, logistics firms, and freight carriers are urged to inform drivers about the altered routes and avoid scheduled movements on impacted stretches during specified times. Commuters using private vehicles are also recommended to plan journeys outside the designated hours or use alternative routes to avoid delays.Sources from MMRDA and contractor J. Kumar Infraprojects Ltd underscore that the Night‑Work Protocol aligns with sustainable infrastructure priorities. By shifting bulky and time‑consuming tasks to off‑peak hours, emissions from idling vehicles are expected to reduce, contributing to lower ambient pollution levels—a key consideration in Thane’s commitment to eco‑responsible urban development.

This traffic advisory comes amid growing recognition that mass-transit expansion must coexist with urban liveability. As Metro 4 progresses—with spans targeting critical intercity corridors such as Thane–Bhayander—the integration of construction schedules with city traffic flow is increasingly being seen as an essential component of equitable and low-carbon urban planning.Thane’s initiative mirrors global best practices, where major infrastructure works are scheduled during city “quiet hours” to alleviate commuter impact. This approach is expected to enhance public cooperation and trust, which are vital for the smooth delivery of sustainable transit networks.

With construction scheduled until July 14, authorities have committed to continuous monitoring and adjustments based on commuter feedback and on-ground conditions. The long-term goal is to balance progress with people’s daily mobility needs—and set a template for future Metro corridor projects across the region.
