Thane Pedestrian Injured by Tire Killer Installed Near Railway Station
In a concerning turn of events, the newly installed tire killers near the Thane railway station, aimed at preventing vehicles from driving in the wrong direction, have turned into a hazard for pedestrians. These devices, designed to stop cars from traveling on the wrong side of busy roads, have resulted in several pedestrian injuries, raising concerns among local residents.
According to reports, at least seven pedestrians have been seriously injured after encountering the tire killers near Shivaji Road, the main route to the Thane railway station. The device, which is meant to deter vehicles from violating traffic rules, has instead become a significant risk to those on foot, with the obstacles causing trips and falls. Residents have expressed their displeasure, urging the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and Thane traffic police to reconsider the placement of these tire killers. Many have pointed out that installing such devices on busy roads leading to the railway station, where pedestrians frequently walk, is a dangerous oversight. Locals have requested the authorities to move the devices to less congested, low-traffic areas where the risk to pedestrians would be minimized.
In response to the growing number of complaints, the Thane traffic police have stated that they will evaluate the situation and make further decisions after receiving feedback from the public. To address the immediate concern, they have placed warning boards along the roads near the tire killers to alert pedestrians about the hazard. The authorities have also advised people to avoid walking on these roads, although residents argue that the issue needs a more permanent solution. Tire killers, or road spikes, are primarily used to prevent vehicles from driving on the wrong side of the road and to reduce traffic violations. They are particularly effective in areas with high vehicle congestion, but in this case, their placement near the busy Thane railway station has led to unintended consequences. While the devices may prevent accidents due to wrong-side driving, they have become a source of danger for those simply walking to the station.
The rising number of pedestrian injuries has led many Thane residents to call for a re-evaluation of the tire killer placement. Some have suggested relocating these devices to less-trafficked roads or implementing alternative traffic calming measures that are more pedestrian-friendly. Until then, locals remain hopeful that the authorities will take swift action to prevent further harm.
