The first phase of the Kasarvadavli Flyover on Thane’s bustling Ghodbunder Road officially opened to the public on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in regional infrastructure development. Constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), this new flyover is poised to substantially reduce traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between Thane and its neighbouring cities, including Mumbai and Vasai. This strategic infrastructure upgrade is critical for fostering more efficient, sustainable, and equitable urban mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
According to MMRDA officials, the newly inaugurated flyover is expected to provide considerable relief to both daily commuters and cargo transporters who frequently utilise Ghodbunder Road. This arterial route serves as a crucial link connecting several key areas, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai, and Virar. The road is particularly known for its heavy vehicle movement, especially trailers transporting goods towards the Mumbai-Gujarat route via JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) and Vashi, making traffic alleviation a high priority for regional logistics and economic activity. The flyover features a 7.5-meter wide, two-lane design, meticulously engineered to accommodate the substantial traffic volume. Complementing the elevated structure, an underpass with a 2×2 lane configuration has also been integrated into the design, ensuring a multi-layered approach to traffic management. With a total ramp length of approximately 721 metres, the flyover has been designed to efficiently handle up to 73,333 passenger car units daily, reflecting a robust capacity to manage future traffic growth and reduce bottlenecks.
