Thane Metro Line Ten Gaimukh Shivaji Chowk Tenders By December 15 For Rs 8,000-crore project

The Thane Metropolitan Region is poised for a transformative public transit upgrade as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) prepares to issue tenders for Metro Line 10, connecting Gaimukh in Thane to Shivaji Chowk in Mira-Bhayander. Scheduled to commence by 15 December, the Rs 8,000-crore project aims to provide faster, sustainable commuting options for the city’s burgeoning suburban population. Officials expect the corridor to significantly reduce congestion along the heavily trafficked Ghodbunder Road.

Spanning 9.7 kilometres and fully elevated, the proposed line will pass through key nodes including Gaimukh Retibunder, Chena Gaon, Varsova Gaon, Kashimira, and Miragaon, before terminating at Shivaji Chowk. An official highlighted that the metro will accommodate an estimated 4.5 lakh daily commuters by 2031, offering a reliable, low-emission alternative to road travel. The corridor will also integrate seamlessly with the broader Mumbai Metro network. Interchange facilities are planned at Gaimukh for Line 4A and Miragaon for Line 9, enabling commuters to traverse the metropolitan region more efficiently. A metro depot at Mogharpada is also in the pipeline, supporting operations and maintenance of the new fleet.

Preparatory work for the project is underway. Clearances related to forest lands, mangroves, CRZ zones, and wildlife protection areas are being processed, while the appointed consultant has already prepared comprehensive tender documents. “Timely approvals and coordination across multiple agencies will be critical to maintaining the project schedule,” an MMRDA official noted. Industry experts emphasise the project’s importance in supporting sustainable urban mobility in Thane. By providing a rapid, clean alternative to private vehicles, the metro is expected to reduce traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions, and improve air quality across densely populated corridors. Urban planners also see the project as a key lever for integrating peripheral suburbs into the city’s mainstream transport network, facilitating equitable access to economic opportunities.

Transport authorities aim to complete the Line 10 project by 2030, aligning with long-term sustainable urban mobility targets for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Officials said coordinated supervision during construction and regular updates on land, environmental, and infrastructure clearances will ensure timely delivery with minimal disruption to local communities. By fast-tracking Metro Line 10, Thane is taking a substantial step toward greener, more connected suburban transit, supporting the region’s aspirations for sustainable, inclusive urban growth.
