Thane has become the latest city to embrace technological advancements in public transportation with the introduction of AI-powered Smart ST buses.
This initiative by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) aims to enhance commuter safety and modernize the state’s public transport system. The new buses, which will operate on the Thane-Nagpur route, are equipped with advanced safety features designed to protect passengers and ensure smooth operations. These include driver monitoring systems, GPS tracking, foam-based fire suppression, and CCTV surveillance. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows for real-time monitoring of driver behavior, alerting authorities to potential issues such as drowsiness or distraction.
One of the standout features of these buses is the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which includes blind spot cameras offering 360-degree visibility. This technology is particularly beneficial in preventing accidents caused by human error, thereby improving overall road safety. In addition to safety enhancements, the buses offer modern passenger amenities. These include Wi-Fi connectivity, LED screens for information dissemination, public announcement systems, and mobile GPS tracking for real-time updates. Each bus is also equipped with four strategically placed CCTV cameras to monitor both the interior and exterior, further ensuring passenger security.
The introduction of these Smart ST buses aligns with MSRTC’s broader plan to modernize its fleet and improve the commuter experience, particularly for women and rural travelers who rely heavily on ST services. The initiative reflects a commitment to integrating technology into public transport to meet the evolving needs of passengers. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has been instrumental in advocating for technological upgrades within MSRTC. His efforts have been recognized by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who emphasized the importance of such initiatives in transforming public transport services into a “five-star” experience for passengers.
The deployment of these AI-powered buses is expected to be gradual, with plans to introduce them across more routes in the coming months. This expansion will not only improve safety but also contribute to the modernization of public transport infrastructure in Maharashtra. Passengers interested in availing themselves of this service can make reservations through the official MSRTC website or at designated reservation counters. It is advisable to book tickets in advance to secure seats, as these smart buses are expected to be in high demand.
This move marks a significant step towards creating a safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced public transport system in Maharashtra. By continuously evaluating and responding to passenger needs, MSRTC aims to provide reliable and secure transportation solutions across the state.
