Thane’s Ghodbunder Road, one of the busiest arterial routes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is set for a significant transformation as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to widen it into a 7+7-lane concrete corridor. The ₹500-crore project aims to address chronic traffic congestion, improve commuter experience, and integrate seamlessly with other ongoing infrastructure developments in the city.
The expansion of Ghodbunder Road is part of a broader ₹5,200-crore infrastructure initiative designed to modernise Thane’s transport network. This includes the construction of 23 internal roads costing ₹700 crore, a 3+3-lane elevated corridor from Anand Nagar to Saket at ₹1,800 crore, and the upcoming ₹2,200-crore Thane Coastal Road, which will provide an east-west corridor parallel to Ghodbunder Road. Officials emphasise that this multi-pronged approach will enhance local traffic management, improve intercity connectivity, and provide long-term solutions to congestion. Traffic experts note that Ghodbunder Road experiences heavy peak-hour congestion due to the rapid growth of Thane as a commercial and residential hub. By widening the corridor into 14 lanes, the MMRDA expects to significantly reduce bottlenecks, accommodate increasing vehicular volume, and ensure smoother flow for lakhs of commuters travelling daily. The project will complement new metro lines (4, 4A, and 5), which are expected to provide high-capacity public transport and further ease the road’s traffic burden.
MMRDA officials confirmed that construction plans are being coordinated with other infrastructure projects in the city to minimise disruption. Advanced traffic simulation research is also underway to devise short, medium, and long-term strategies for congestion management. The integrated approach aims to harmonise road expansion with urban planning objectives, ensuring that the corridor supports sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable urban mobility. Experts stress that Ghodbunder Road’s redevelopment is not just about road widening but is part of a larger vision to create a resilient and future-ready transport ecosystem in Thane. “The corridor will provide efficient connectivity for commuters, reduce travel time, and improve the overall quality of urban life,” said a senior official from the MMRDA. The project is expected to start soon, marking a major step towards addressing one of Thane’s most pressing infrastructure challenges.
With the combination of widened roads, elevated corridors, coastal connectivity, and metro integration, Thane is positioning itself as a model for urban mobility solutions that balance high-volume traffic with sustainable development principles.
