Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has demolished 30 unauthorised structures across nine wards, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and equitable urban development. The civic body mobilised deputy commissioner-led special squads to target illegal constructions—including extra floors, columns, plinths, and entire buildings—found in hot spots like Yeoor, Mumbra, Diva, Wagle Estate, Naupada, Uthalsar, Majiwada–Manpada, Vartak Nagar, Lokmanya Nagar, and Kalwa.
The drive is aligned with directives from the Bombay High Court, prompting civic teams to conduct comprehensive surveys, informed by beat inspectors, to identify unauthorised developments. The demolitions were authorised by Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, with ward-level anti-encroachment squads established to ensure consistent enforcement. One notable case in the Lokmanya–Savarkar Nagar ward has escalated to the legal realm, with criminal proceedings initiated under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act. Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Shankar Patole confirmed that investigations are underway and that the crackdown will continue until all identified violations are addressed.
In Diva alone, two fresh demolitions were carried out, bringing the locality’s total to 13 in this phase. Although authorities faced resistance and had to resume demolition under police protection, the operation persisted. The demolition drive on 20 June had already seen 33 illegal structures razed city-wide, including a scrapyard godown located within Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) limits.Special squads were led by Deputy Commissioners Manish Joshi and Sachin Sangle, supported by Deputy Commissioner of Police Subhashchandra Borse. These inter-agency efforts ensured the operation’s smooth execution, even amidst confrontations.
The TMC’s aggressive campaign is not merely punitive—it signals a commitment to orderly and environmentally respectful city planning. By removing unauthorised constructions, the civic body aims to secure equitable infrastructure, preserve public rights of way, and prevent hazardous developments that threaten ecological stability and community welfare. This enforcement drive aligns closely with Mumbai’s broader vision for sustainable urban growth. Illegal constructions often violate building codes, compromise safety, and strain civic services. By proactively clearing unlawful structures, Thane is laying the groundwork for more equitable, resilient, and carbon-aware communities.
As the demolition drive concludes, the message is clear: irregular urban sprawl cannot be accommodated in Greater Mumbai’s pursuit of a sustainable, well-planned future. For residents and local authorities, the drive offers reassurance that city planning is being enforced, and that infrastructure will evolve in tandem with both ecological priorities and citizens’ rights.
