Navi Mumbai’s critical arterial link, the Thane-Belapur Road, will remain closed to vehicular traffic from 14 to 21 May due to urgent road infrastructure upgrades.
The closure is set to impact thousands of daily commuters, logistics operators, and public transport routes, as essential resurfacing work is undertaken by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The roadwork is focused near the IKEA junction, a major transit hub in the region. The closure spans the stretch between Savita Chemical and Turbhe Railway Station. The planned timing for the operations is from 9 PM to midnight, with complete vehicle restrictions enforced throughout the repair window. This includes two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, cars, and freight vehicles.
This move, while disruptive in the short term, is part of a broader urban transport overhaul aimed at enhancing road safety, long-term sustainability, and infrastructure resilience in the rapidly urbanising satellite city. Officials from NMMC have confirmed that the project will strengthen the road surface, which has shown signs of wear due to continuous heavy traffic and monsoonal damage. Navi Mumbai’s urban planners and civic engineers view this initiative as a necessary investment to future-proof the region’s mobility network. With an eye on reducing the carbon footprint and improving surface durability, the NMMC is reportedly using environmentally sustainable materials and construction methods that align with the city’s goals for green infrastructure.
In anticipation of commuter disruption, the Navi Mumbai Traffic Department has issued a formal advisory, asking the public to use designated alternate routes. Signage and on-ground personnel have been deployed to manage diversions and avoid bottlenecks during peak hours. Officials emphasise that although the operational hours for repair are limited to nighttime, the road will remain closed 24×7 for safety reasons during the entire repair period. The public response has been mixed. While many residents appreciate the intent behind road strengthening and the municipality’s commitment to sustainable transport, daily travellers are concerned about increased commute times and potential congestion on feeder routes.
Transport experts highlight the need for such mid-sized infrastructure upgrades to keep pace with Navi Mumbai’s growing population and vehicular load.
