Thane Aims Traffic-Free Ghodbunder Road By January 2026, Confirms State Transport Minister

Thane is set for a major urban mobility transformation, with the state government announcing that the city’s arterial Ghodbunder Road will be fully congestion-free by January 2026. The commitment was made during a high-level review meeting of ongoing infrastructure works chaired by the state transport minister earlier this week.

The review, attended by senior officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Public Works Department (PWD), and other key agencies, assessed the progress of road upgrades and connectivity projects across the region. Civic representatives and members of a citizen group advocating smoother traffic movement also participated, underlining the increasing public demand for efficient transport infrastructure. Officials informed that critical works including resurfacing at Gaimukh Ghat, laying of the Amrut Jalvahini water pipeline, service road improvements, and the relocation of power distribution channels are progressing steadily. These works are aimed at improving vehicular flow and ensuring safer passage for commuters on one of Thane’s busiest corridors connecting the Eastern and Western Express Highways.

According to the transport department, coordination between agencies such as the traffic police, PWD, and TMC has been intensified to minimise disruptions during the ongoing works. The resurfacing at Gaimukh Ghat is being carried out in phases to maintain partial access for vehicles, ensuring essential mobility is not hindered. Citizen representatives from the ‘Justice for Ghodbunder Road’ group presented detailed observations on recurring congestion points, urging authorities to address incomplete repairs and uneven service lanes. Following the presentation, the minister directed the agencies to implement corrective measures immediately, including simultaneous resurfacing of all flyovers and service lanes along the stretch.

In a key policy move, the minister also instructed that administrative control of Ghodbunder Road should be transferred to the Thane Municipal Corporation after the completion of resurfacing works, allowing for more integrated urban road maintenance and traffic planning in the future. The government’s renewed focus on timely completion and inter-agency collaboration is expected to bring tangible benefits for thousands of daily commuters. Officials have confirmed that several civic projects nearing completion will be inaugurated by the end of November, with remaining tasks expected to wrap up by mid-December.

Urban planners note that once the upgrades are complete, Ghodbunder Road could emerge as a model for sustainable road infrastructure within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region—integrating smoother mobility, reduced emissions from idling vehicles, and improved pedestrian safety. Residents have welcomed the announcement with optimism, anticipating that 2026 could mark a long-awaited turning point in Thane’s urban mobility story.
