Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has appointed Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd as the lowest bidder for a critical Phase 2 infrastructure project, valued at approximately Rs 130.2 crore. The contract covers the installation of ballastless track along the elevated section connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Metro Station to Infopark Metro Station, a strategic corridor in the city’s expanding metro network.
Ballastless track technology is widely recognised for its durability, reduced maintenance, and smoother ride quality, particularly in high-speed or high-frequency urban transit corridors. Urban transport analysts note that its adoption in Kochi Metro reflects the city’s commitment to modern, low-maintenance infrastructure that supports both operational efficiency and long-term sustainability. The elevated section linking Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark is part of Phase 2 expansion, which aims to extend metro connectivity to key residential and commercial zones in Kochi. Planners indicate that this segment will improve last-mile access, reduce congestion along major arterial roads, and enhance public transport adoption, aligning with the city’s climate-resilient and people-centric urban mobility strategy.Industry experts highlight that awarding such contracts through competitive bidding ensures cost efficiency and accountability, while engaging leading engineering firms like Texmaco helps implement technically sophisticated systems. The company has a strong track record in rail infrastructure and is expected to deliver the project within prescribed timelines and quality standards.
With Kochi Metro Phase 2 already in motion, the addition of ballastless tracks will support higher operational speeds, reduce track-related maintenance closures, and strengthen the reliability of urban rail services. This development also positions Kochi as a benchmark for metro projects in emerging Indian cities, emphasising durability, efficiency, and long-term urban transport planning.KMRL’s ongoing expansions, including Phase 2 and future corridors, continue to be instrumental in shaping Kochi’s sustainable and integrated transport ecosystem, catering to both daily commuters and the city’s growing IT and commercial workforce.
