Tesla has begun hiring drivers in Delhi and Mumbai to test its Autopilot system, signalling a significant step forward in the electric vehicle giant’s long-awaited entry into the Indian market.
The company is recruiting ‘Prototype Vehicle Operators’ to operate its engineering vehicles under real-world Indian conditions. These drivers will gather critical data to fine-tune Tesla’s driver-assistance technologies, including its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features, for India’s dense and unpredictable traffic. The development highlights Tesla’s intent to adapt its vehicles to Indian roads rather than offering an off-the-shelf global product. It also underscores the importance of local data in shaping autonomous and semi-autonomous driving systems for a market known for its unique driving behaviour, erratic road infrastructure, and mixed traffic conditions. According to Tesla’s job description, the role involves five to eight hours of daily driving in urban traffic while managing recording equipment and collecting performance data. Candidates are expected to have experience with ADAS technology and be comfortable in high-performance and fast-paced environments. Tesla’s Autopilot system offers features like lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and automated lane changes, while the more advanced FSD technology can navigate intersections and execute turns under driver supervision.
In North America, all Tesla vehicles are now equipped with Tesla Vision, a camera-only AI system that forgoes radar and relies on deep learning to interpret surroundings. Adapting this system to Indian roads requires localised testing to account for everything from stray animals to informal lane behaviour and inconsistent signage.
