Terminal 1 Redevelopment at Mumbai Airport to Boost Capacity and Sustainability by 2028
Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is embarking on an ambitious redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), set to redefine passenger experience, sustainability, and capacity. Slated for completion by 2028-29, the project will enhance the terminal’s capacity by 42%, accommodating 20 million passengers annually, making it a vital addition to Mumbai’s growing aviation sector.
This redevelopment will span over two million square feet and will be carried out in phases to ensure minimal disruption to daily operations. The project will begin with the demolition of the existing T1 structure in November 2025, while CSMIA’s Terminal 2 and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, expected to open in 2025, will absorb passenger traffic during the redevelopment period.
A Vision for Sustainable Innovation
At the core of the T1 redevelopment is a commitment to sustainability. The new terminal will stand as a beacon of eco-conscious airport design, with biophilic features and sustainable architecture inspired by nature. Designed to bring the outdoors inside, the terminal will feature lush indoor greenery, natural light, and open spaces that are intended to uplift and energise passengers. With wave-inspired architecture that echoes the fluid motion of the ocean, the terminal aims to set a new global benchmark for sustainable, green airport design. The revamped T1 will focus on seamless connectivity, with the creation of a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) linking Mumbai’s air, rail, and road networks. The MMTH will enable passengers to effortlessly connect to various modes of transport, including direct metro access and underground bus stations, shaping a future-proof transportation gateway.
The terminal will also undergo significant upgrades in infrastructure. The passenger terminal building (PTB) will be fully revamped, catering to domestic operations and offering the flexibility for future international services. With enhanced facilities such as district cooling, advanced electrical substations, and an improved baggage handling system, the terminal will set new operational standards. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, highlighted that the redevelopment of T1 is not just about expanding capacity; it is about future-proofing Mumbai’s position as a global aviation hub. “Our priority remains to deliver the exceptional service that our passengers have come to expect, while transforming T1 into a sustainable and innovative terminal for the future,” Adani said. The completion of this redevelopment will not only meet the growing demand of India’s booming aviation market but will also ensure that Mumbai’s airport remains at the forefront of sustainable design and passenger convenience.
