Telangana unveils long term logistics roadmap

Telangana has outlined an ambitious strategy to position itself among India’s leading logistics hubs, linking infrastructure expansion with long-term economic targets under its Telangana Rising 2047 framework. Speaking at an industry conference in Mumbai, the State’s industries leadership detailed plans to double Telangana’s contribution to national GDP over the next two decades, with logistics identified as a core growth engine.

At the centre of the roadmap is a push to modernise multimodal connectivity and streamline supply chain operations. Officials highlighted projects such as the proposed Regional Ring Road, Metro Rail Phase II expansion, development of new airports and a planned dry port facility aimed at improving freight aggregation and export efficiency. Together, these projects are expected to reduce transit times and enhance last-mile industrial connectivity. The State is also advancing reforms under its updated logistics policy framework, focusing on regulatory simplification, digital integration and green logistics practices. According to officials, intelligent transport systems, automation and artificial intelligence-driven warehousing will be critical to improving competitiveness as global supply chains recalibrate post-pandemic.

Urban development analysts say Telangana’s logistics ambition is closely tied to Hyderabad’s spatial expansion. Warehousing clusters and industrial corridors along the Outer Ring Road have already altered land use patterns, with Grade A warehousing, cold chain facilities and rail-linked terminals gaining traction. The challenge, they note, lies in balancing rapid freight infrastructure growth with sustainable land management and environmental safeguards. The government has indicated that sustainability will be embedded within the logistics blueprint. Plans include promoting energy-efficient warehouses, electric mobility for freight movement and improved cold chain systems to minimise food loss. Such measures align with broader efforts to decarbonise transport, a sector that contributes significantly to urban emissions.

Workforce development is another pillar of the strategy. In collaboration with skill development institutions, including Young India Skills University, the State aims to create a pipeline of trained professionals in supply chain management, automation technologies and logistics operations.Industry experts observe that as India seeks to reduce logistics costs as a percentage of GDP, States with integrated road, rail and air cargo networks will gain a competitive edge. Telangana’s approach reflects a recognition that logistics infrastructure must evolve beyond standalone warehouses to encompass digital platforms, multimodal parks and climate-resilient design.

While investor outreach remains central to the plan, execution will depend on coordinated land allocation, transparent approvals and long-term infrastructure financing. If delivered effectively, the logistics push could reinforce Telangana’s industrial base while shaping a more connected, efficient and lower-carbon freight ecosystem for the region.
