The Centre has announced an unprecedented investment of Rs 2 lakh crore for road development projects in Telangana over the next four years, marking a significant step towards transforming the state’s transportation infrastructure.
The ambitious initiative is set to redefine the state’s road network, boosting connectivity and propelling regional economic growth. In a public address held in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways confirmed that this investment will further extend the national highway network in Telangana, significantly enhancing its road infrastructure. The Centre’s commitment to this project highlights its long-term strategy for regional growth and connectivity, particularly in rural and remote areas of the state. Notably, the national highway network in Telangana has expanded from 2,500 km to over 5,000 km in the past decade, laying the foundation for future development.
The minister also emphasised the government’s focus on equitable development, stating that roadworks are currently underway in all 33 districts of the state. Telangana’s roadmap includes not only the construction of new highways but also the ongoing upgrades to existing ones. With projects already completed worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore, the Centre aims to create an infrastructure ecosystem that connects urban and rural areas, encourages trade, and facilitates smoother transportation. Key projects include the four-laning of National Highway-363, a 94.60 km stretch that connects Mancherial to Repallewada, extending towards the Telangana–Maharashtra border. This project alone, with an investment of Rs 3,526 crore, will significantly improve connectivity between Telangana and Maharashtra. Another major initiative is the construction of vital underpasses and overpasses near the Kawal Tiger Reserve, aimed at safeguarding wildlife and preventing vehicular-animal collisions. Additionally, a six-lane vehicular underpass at the Kadthal bypass on NH-44 is set to eliminate a major road safety hazard.
The Centre’s road development plans are not only about improving transport but also about enhancing the region’s economic vitality. With increased connectivity, trade, and tourism will flourish, especially in areas like Medaram, a prominent cultural site for Telangana’s tribal communities. Projects such as the four-laning of roads to Rudrampur and Bhadrachalam will ensure better access to the temple town, further strengthening the state’s religious and cultural tourism potential. Strategic roads like the Bodhan–Armoor route, which will serve as an important corridor connecting Armoor–Jagtial–Mancherial, will enhance access to Telangana’s coal belt and industrial hubs like Ramagundam. Additionally, four-laning of the Armoor–Jagtial–Mancherial highway is awaiting Union Cabinet approval with an estimated investment of Rs 5,000 crore.
These projects are not just about improving infrastructure; they are about fostering sustainable development. The investments are expected to create thousands of jobs, with direct employment of over 74 lakh man-days and 93 lakh man-days in indirect jobs. With a focus on eco-friendly road construction methods and the enhancement of regional infrastructure, these projects aim to contribute positively to the state’s economic and environmental future. As Telangana’s road network continues to expand, it is evident that the Centre’s push for a robust, sustainable, and connected infrastructure will have long-lasting effects on the state’s growth trajectory, ensuring that it keeps pace with the nation’s evolving demands.
