Telangana’s railway infrastructure is witnessing a major upgrade as redevelopment projects under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme gather pace. Among the stations under transformation, Mahabubabad is nearing completion, with officials confirming that nearly 92 per cent of the work is already done at an estimated project cost of ₹26.49 crore. Once operational, the station will deliver world-class amenities and a passenger experience designed to match global benchmarks.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched in 2021, is part of Indian Railways’ long-term strategy to modernise railway infrastructure in a phased and structured manner. It focuses on redesigning stations with improved facilities, environmental sustainability, and inclusivity at its core. According to railway officials, each redevelopment plan is tailored to the specific needs of the station, with an emphasis on transforming them into vibrant urban hubs rather than mere transit points. In Telangana, Mahabubabad is emerging as a showcase project of this scheme. The upgrade includes aesthetic facades, modernised waiting halls, improved platforms, redesigned roofing, and better lighting systems. For smoother passenger mobility, lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi are being installed. In addition, dedicated pedestrian pathways, accessible parking, and widened entry and exit points are being created to address long-standing commuter concerns.
Officials also highlighted that these upgrades extend beyond comfort to sustainability. Eco-friendly solutions, noise-free tracks, and improved landscaping are integral to the design, while renewable energy integration is being considered for future phases. With Indian cities grappling with rising urban congestion and carbon emissions, experts view the greening of railway infrastructure as a crucial step towards sustainable transport. A key highlight of the scheme is inclusivity. Facilities are being designed in line with the Accessible India Campaign, ensuring that passengers with reduced mobility and persons with disabilities are not left behind. Low-height ticket counters, ramps, Braille signage, tactile pathways, and accessible toilets are being introduced to make stations universally friendly. This focus on equity underscores a larger vision of making railway infrastructure socially responsible as well as technologically advanced.
Officials believe that once Mahabubabad and other Telangana stations under the scheme are fully redeveloped, they will not only improve daily travel for lakhs of passengers but also act as catalysts for local economic growth. Features such as kiosks for local products under the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative are expected to support small businesses and artisans, connecting regional economies with national passenger flows. With urbanisation on the rise and passenger footfalls increasing, the transformation of railway stations is emerging as a cornerstone of India’s transport policy. The Amrit Bharat Scheme is not only about bricks and mortar but about reimagining how railway stations fit into the fabric of sustainable and equitable cities. For Telangana, the near-completion of Mahabubabad station stands as an early sign of the future direction Indian Railways is taking.
