Telangana Prioritises Infrastructure for Growth

Telangana is embarking on a comprehensive infrastructure development strategy, positioning it as a frontrunner in sustainable urbanisation and economic growth.

With a focus on projects like the ambitious Future City and enhancements to existing urban frameworks, the state is channeling resources to build resilient, eco-friendly, and inclusive cities. The state’s 2025-26 budget reflects this commitment, allocating significant funds towards urban development. Notably, Rs 17,677 crore has been earmarked for municipal administration, with a substantial portion dedicated to infrastructure projects under the H-CITI initiative. This includes the construction of 31 flyovers and 17 underpasses, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and improving urban mobility.

Central to Telangana’s urban vision is the development of the Future City, a planned urban area spanning 765 square kilometers. Designed to be a net-zero emissions city, it will incorporate sustainable practices in energy, water, and waste management. The project aims to set a benchmark for eco-friendly urban development in India. To support these initiatives, the state is exploring diverse funding mechanisms. Efforts include setting revenue targets for departments, preventing leakages, and considering one-time settlement schemes to realise long-pending dues. Additionally, the government is looking into externally aided projects to finance development.

The state’s focus on infrastructure is also evident in its energy sector. Telangana has surpassed power demand estimates, registering 17,162 MW against the projected 16,877 MW, driven by rapid residential and commercial expansion. To address this, plans are underway to build over 400 new substations within the next five years, ensuring a stable power supply to meet growing demands. Furthermore, the government is leveraging technology to enhance interdepartmental coordination. Regular virtual meetings and teleconferences are being conducted to assess progress and ensure that projects stay on track. This approach aims to streamline processes and foster a collaborative environment among various departments.

In line with its commitment to sustainable development, Telangana is also focusing on water infrastructure. The Outer Ring Road Phase II water supply scheme is being implemented with an outlay of Rs 5,942 crore, aiming to provide clean drinking water to urban and rural areas. The state’s proactive approach to infrastructure development is not only enhancing urban living standards but also attracting significant investments. Since December 2023, Telangana has secured over ₹3 lakh crore in investments, with ₹1 lakh crore invested in just the current year, highlighting its growing prominence as an economic hub

As Telangana continues to prioritise infrastructure development, its efforts serve as a model for other states aiming to achieve sustainable and inclusive urban growth. By integrating eco-friendly practices, leveraging technology, and fostering interdepartmental collaboration, the state is laying a strong foundation for a resilient future.
